Came across these pics recently of my Grandad, James 'Jimmy' McNiffe, who served with the Royal Engineers as a Plant operator (mainly cranes). He service records note him serving with - 4 HQ (mechanical equipment), 21st Army group during the war. and - 860 mechanical equipment coy & 1 Engineer base Plant park coy in Germany until 1947. Nothing amazing in the pics but i think they show a bunch of blokes who obviously got on well during their time in uniform (and a bit of machinery for those interested !) Jimmy outside Hannover city hall.
What is 19 RB I have a photo of a Ruston Hornsby Digger with that Marking taken at Anzio 1944 standing Front is Major Ruston (Commander of 446 Bty) of the family that made them. Did this kit get around enough to get to NW Europe at the end of the war. Is that a Z on them what significance was it then Apologies if this hijacks your thread. Thought it might be of interest
No problem, that's a really interesting post I just assumed it related to the 19- RB which was a model of crane produced by Ruston-bucyrus. I've got my Grandad's course notes at home which I'll check when I'm back. I also have some detail somewhere regarding the crane pic which I'll try to find as it may answer your question. Mac.
