    Boston III Z2179
In the late afternoon of 31 October seventeen Bostons on 88 and 107 Squadrons headed for power station in the area of Rijsel and Bethune, France. Four Bostons flew to Mazingarbe, four to Gosnay, six to Pont-a-Vendin and three to Comines. ...Henry Collings headed for Pont-a-Vendin. Simpson (other aircraft) could not find his target so he dropped his bombs on an alternative. Collings did the same before, over Jonkershove his Boston was picked up by two incoming FW 190s of 8/JG26 (Focke Wulf - German fighters) from Wevelgem-Kortijk, Belgium. Leutnant Paul Galland (one of two younger brothers of Adolph) was flying the leading fighter and his wingman was probably Oberfeldwebel Johann Edman. They attacked as soon as the Boston came within range. Stanley Nash and Francis Pickering, the two air gunners, returned fire but shells from Galland's guns set the aircraft on fire. The other crew member was Ronald Tebbutt, the 32-year-old navigator. The Boston touched down, flipped over amongst some willow trees and carried on through a field before exploding. One of the crew members was still alive but he died shortly afterwards. The wreckage was spread for hundreds of yards. It was Paul Galland's seventeenth victory and his last. Five hours later he was killed when he was shot down into the sea by a Spitfire while returning from an escort mission for the bombers to Canterbury. Edman, who then dispatched the Spitfire, was himself shot down and killed on 21 March 1944, by which time he had five victories.

DURRANT, HAROLD DAVISON (age 27). Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada. Flying Officer (C/24452). Royal Canadian Air Force. Drowned. Body recovered from the sea. HM LST-420 was sunk by a mine in the English Channel, while ferrying R.A.F personnel to Belgium. They were unable to enter the port of Ostend due to heavy weather. On returning to England, just outside the port of Ostend, she struck a mine. After a big explosion the vessel broke in two and sank quickly. It carried military equipement and a great number of Air Crew personal. Fourteen officers and 224 other ranks were lost. Only 31 were saved. It was the greatest loss of life on a British landing craft during World War II. Plot 1, Row D, Grave 7.
