While something that irritates is...well...irritating, we must always be careful not to 'throw the baby out with the bath water'. In my mind it's a case of 'expect the unexpected' and I must say that my own research over the years has been helped on a few occasions by various people making 'off the cuff' comments that have actually generated lateral thinking and real progress. Those fall into the 'hindsight' and 'why didn't I think of that' categories. As I said in a previous post (which seems to have been approved by quite a few people judging by the number of 'likes'), this is a brilliant Forum and long may it continue. If anyone doesn't like what one sees, then there are the options to ignore, note, make comment or, as I'm now about to do, 'clear off for a cup of char'.

    Yes but 'What If................'

I looked but I cant seem to see any real problems. When I started posting online in 2000 it was really bad for sensitive souls. One man (RH) ran a lot of Militaria forums and he was an out-and-out crook. His moderators picked up his bad habits and the forums they moved too also became lawless. Reading members PMs was routine and you would even get a virus sent and your hard-drive wiped if you dared to criticise. An Australian man set up a quite successful WW2 Forum and against all advice he appointed of of the crooks Moderators as his IT expert and then a few years later when they fell out he was locked out of his own forum and could only watch as all trace of his Forum was deleted. Forum abuse then was comparable to Twitter/Reddit today.

Interesting indeed…back in 2015 I received an unsolicited e-mail (nb. not a PM) from somebody with the initials MK. I’d seen him pop on various forums over a period of years. He clearly knew his ‘stuff’. I had/have no issues with him. But curiously, about a week after I questioned the confused ramblings of an alleged Vet, the aforementioned e-mail arrived out of the blue. It had an attachment with a virus.

Personally I think it is important to tell people who are getting out of line to snap out of it, and if the person doesn't listen and is really disruptive they should be shown the door. It's not about whether a forum is going to collapse without this... it's more like tending a garden.

That said, on the one hand I have no idea if forum administration here has had a quiet word; on the other, I'm not aware of any public word. I have put the individual on ignore and lost respect for forum administration for not tending the weeds.

P.S. The internet is a place where people interact. It's not the same as meeting people face to face; nevertheless it has a great deal of value and can have a great deal of both positive and negative effect on a person. So far as the idea that this is "just the Internet" is concerned, I think it is long past time to take that phrase out back and shoot it dead.

And yet despite that the AH Forum has some very well informed members who have provided me with some useful information.

I'm not sure what seems to be the problem here but it seems a great shame if some posts and comments are causing upset to other members.

Equally a shame when people take it upon themselves to indulge in the tricky game of 'moderating' a community of 100 different perspectives, with some choosing to follow a path of abusive language and stalking from thread to thread, or delivering ultimatums. As it makes the job of smoothing things over and maintaining our traditionally steady & reasonably calm course almost impossible, & leads to... this.

Does anyone really think this place would work even slightly as it does if every bit of admin/mod effort was laid bare to the whole?
I do hope not, because it definitely wouldn't.

And I'd have to ban Owen, followed by myself.
    D can ban herself. I wouldn't dare.

    Line drawn.
If someone bugs you: report it.
If you really can't control your response: maybe ignore them, or even wander off.
