Spotted an Air Crew Europe medal for sale...seems to be right but can't be 100% sure!..She does not look like the shiney repros but are there any tell-tale sign for a fake? Stamped on the back is Sgt Reid Air Gunner 1942 Is it usual to have a medal stamped in this manner...does the 1942 refer to qualifing or date of death? If date of death then the cwgc referes to 4 Sgts- REID, GEORGE ERNEST REID, GEORGE THOMSON REID, IRVIN REID, STANLEIGH LOWRY Is there anyway of checking if any of these men qualified for the air crew europe medal? Thanks to everyone! Sods law...bought medal news and seen a letter thanking the ed for a great article in last months magazine showing what to look for in the air crew fakes! cheers mark
I don't have a scanner but I do have the above copy, but I would think one of the members of this or the GWF would have both and send it to you. IIRC it was only a half-page or so of photos and a side of text. If a UK WW2 award it would have been issued unnamed - only South Africa and Australia officially named their British medals and respective WW2 national medal, but with just service number, initials and surname - yet privately engraved/stamped articles are often seen. The 'unofficial' nature of the details on it would immediately point to this; and this could indeed have been done privately by his relatives if he were a casualty, and could be the date of loss.
