    AIR LANDING AND PARACHUTE BATTALIONS

These units provided the infantry component of the Airborne Division. Air Landing troops
were landed by glider and could carry more and heavier weapons and equipment. Parachute
troops dropped by parachute and were necessarily lightly armed and equipped.

This page also includes Air Landing and Parachute Brigade Headquarters, plus the
Pathfinder Company and Glider Pilot units.

    AIRLANDING BATTALION

Airlanding Battalion. War Establishment 1/239/2. March 1943.
Airlanding Battalion. War Establishment 1/239/3. March 1945.

War Establishment 1/239/2 with an effective date of March 1943. War Establishment I/239/3 with an effective date of March 1945 contained only seven amendments and these seem to concern the issuing of PIATs instead of he anti tank rifles. The snipers rifles were also withdrawn. Unusually the motorcycle combinations remained.

There were however unofficial changes in organisation which are mentioned in the text.

The War Establishment tables show 2 X 3” mortar and 12 X mortarmen per company. In practice these were removed from the companies in 1944. The four mortars from the mortar platoon and the two mortars from each company were formed into a Mortar Group of two platoons with six mortars each. The Mortar Group was then used as a reserve for the battalion. In practice there was probably little difference since the weapons were split up amongst the rifle companies and platoons to avoid loosing the entire sub unit in the case of mishap.

As was often the case in airborne units the number of weapons does not equal the number of men. It is assumed that there was a choice of weapons for specific operation.

It is known that in action battalions added men to platoons by taking them from the first reserve. These reserves were intended to ensure that the unit would be up to strength on going into action and keeping it up to strength in action. In fact there was little opportunity to reinforce units once they were landed so the extra men were used from the out set. Of course units often went into action without their full complement because of the need to make full use of the available space and weight capacity of gliders. More equipment or specialists meant fewer platoon personnel.

When the War Establishment for the Air Landing Battalion was issued it was thought that 20mm would give an explosive round and an armour piercing round which would give infantry units both an anti aircraft and an anti tank capability. In fact the 20mm was very little used and was never taken into action by the Air Landing Battalion. It was far too small for use as an anti tank weapon and there was little demand for a unit anti aircraft weapon.

The anti aircraft platoons were re organised to employ .303” Vickers Medium Machine Guns. Eight of these were used. At first they were organised as a single platoon of eight guns but later they were re organised as a Group with two platoons of four guns each. This is not reflected in the War Establishments.

In addition each man in Brigade Headquarters carries Bren magazines for the ground defence platoon.

If necessary the subaltern also organises the personnel of brigade headquarters for defence.

    4 X lightweight motor cycle
    1 X jeep

    1 X car 2 seater (base only)
    1 X car 4 seater (base only)

Note that the two motorcycles and one jeep could not be parachuted at this time but they could be landed by glider and join the battalion later if required. It was also possible to deliver one Universal Carrier per battalion by glider if required. This was used for distributing ammunition and for collecting supply containers.

When the division was engaged on an operation it was usual for the base parties to travel as a brigade or divisional group to a point close to the intended landing. They would then be available to join the unit when contact was made.

The intelligence section was peculiar to the parachute battalion. Its personnel included the Intelligence Officer who was a part of the command group in action. The intelligence serjeant was responsible for the deployment of the intelligence section and for maintaining the situation map. However the intelligence personnel seem also to have been trained as snipers and there were eight snipers rifles available for their use in addition to their personnel weapons. In standard infantry battalions the sniper was always trained in intelligence gathering but was not intelligence trained, a subtle distinction.

To give flexibility the battalion held 4 X .303” MMG for issue to one mortar platoon as an alternative to 3” mortars if required. This suggests that the personnel of at least one mortar platoon were trained in the use of the MMG.

The anti tank platoon used the PIAT anti tank weapon. This was not very effective against armour except at very short range but was the heaviest anti tank weapon that could be parachute dropped. The anti tank platoon also contained the remnants of a previous protection platoon with Bren anti aircraft guns. There was one extra PIAT. This was common in airborne units. The extra weapon could be used by the Bren section or as a reserve. Items were often lost during drops and losses could not be readily replaced on the ground.

This large platoon contained many personnel who remained at base. The Captain plus a small number of key personnel parachuted with the battalion. The Lieutenant remained at base to organise re supply or the joining of base personnel by sea or road. The fact that the transport serjeant and drivers IC parachuted might suggest that they expected transport to be supplied somehow. A small number of jeeps and carriers were landed by glider but probably they expected to be supplied with transport locally when relieved, or even make use of captured transport.

Note that the drivers for the headquarters jeep and cars are included in the administrative platoon.

The section of a parachute battalion differed from the normal infantry section in that it was designed for more independent action. To this end it was commanded by a serjeant with a corporal as second in command. There were ten men altogether and as in an infantry section they were divided into a Bren gun group and a rifle group. The Bren gun group also carried a 2” mortar. This was a much lighter weapon than the normal version, having no base plate. It was difficult to fire accurately and seems to have been used for firing smoke rounds, six being carried. The rifle group included one sniper rifle. The parachute battalion carried a large number of sten guns on its establishment in addition to the rifles issued to each man. They were first made available when the main task of the parachute units was raiding and sabotage. By 1944 there were still 300 Sten guns available as a battalion reserve and these could be issued in lieu of rifles.

The serjeant carried a sten gun
The bren No1 and the 2” mortar man carried .45” automatic pistols but the mortar man could also carry a sten gun
Each of the remaining men was issued with a rifle although one of them could carry a sniper rifle and any of them could carry a sten gun.

The platoon headquarters was small having only the lieutenant, serjeant, batman and runner. The batman would also carry the platoon wireless set. The platoon headquarters had a reserve of one Bren gun and one PIAT.

The lieutenant carried a .45” automatic pistol and could carry a sten gun.
The serjeant carried a sten gun.
The batman and orderly were issued with rifles but could carry a sten gun.
