I joined the the ATC, the Air Defence Cadet Corps about 1938, it was sponsored by business men who foresaw the coming war. The Air Ministry eventually took over and it became the Air Training Corps. The cadets became involved with a lot of the services soon after war broke out, such as the ARP, firewatching and fire brigade. Some from my 12F squadron we even at North Weald air field (Hurricanes and Blenheim(?) bombers) I was a stretcher bearer at the local hospital. Our friend Ron Goldstein I think was a runner of some kind with the ARP. So I'm not surprised there were casualties.

I would say that the majority of these casualties were caused in air incidents when ATC cadets were being carried as passengers for flight experience.

There was one experience post war when a F/L based at Yorkshire RAF station gave his life for an ATC cadet passenger.I think he strapped up the ATC passenger with his parachute when a Wellington,in which they were both flying in, got into difficulties.

Thinkinbg about it,the Wellington may have been a Mark 10 type engaged as a navigational trainer.

    Further note on this incident.

The casualties from this fatal air incident did not qualify for "CWGC status" as the incident is outside the qualifying dates.

On 13 August 1951,a Martinet NR 570 collided with a Wellington PG 376 of No 228 OCU operating out of RAF Leeming,North Yorkshire, with 6 RAF crew plus an ATC cadet,Cadet Corporal Derek Coates on board. In the Martinet, piloted by F/L Hannay was ATC Cadet M Bruton.

Cadet Corporal Derek Coates was the sole survivor from both aircraft and the circumstances of his survival earned the Wellington navigator, F/L J.A Quinton DFC, a wartime navigator, who had just rejoined the RAF,a posthumous George Medal. When the collision occurred,F/L Quinton handed the only parachute within reach to Cadet Corporal Coates, clipped the parachute on to Coates's harness and showed him how to pull the ripcord then instructed him to exit the aircraft through a hole in the fuselage. The action of a gallant airman.

Both aircraft fell to earth in the Richmond area.

This Australian was appointed after you were there but I was wondering if there was any info from his time there as Commandant of London and Essex or where I may source some info.

Mitchell was commandant of the Air Training Corps in London and Essex and was at Lord's watching his cadets play the army at cricket on the day of his death. He died of a cerebral thrombosis at his home, 14 Eresby
House, Rutland Gate, Westminster, London, on 15 August 1944, survived
by his wife, and was buried at Putney Vale cemetery four days later.

Mitchell's final responsibility in the RAF demanded his zeal, leadership, and organizational skills, as he was based in Glasgow to
oversee the distribution, installation, and speedy completion of the
chain of radio direction-finding (radar) stations on the highlands and
islands of Scotland. Described by the air minister as 'temporary work
of exceptional importance', his task was completed by September 1941, and he was placed on the retired list.

This enabled him to take up his new post as gentleman usher of the black rod in the House of Lords-the first officer of the RAF and Australian to be appointed to that post.

    Cheers

    Geoff

Contact the squadron they should have a history of the squadrons activity over the years, also look in the local papers around the time of death and see if there was a local write up.

Also start at the local library and look at their archieves

12F, eh! That sounds like 'our' (53rd Hackney) old rivals in Walthamstow, with whom we competed for the favours of the Womens Junior Air Corps at their dances! I, too, joined the ADCC (53rd Squadron) with my brother in 1938, which was sponsored by Eton Manor Boys' Club. We also served full time in ARP at the Leyton ARP Control Centre whilst attending evening and weekend parades of the Essex Regt of the Home Guard, as well as ATC, so we were
kept well occupied. Aren't we lucky to still live to tell the tale; and who ever heard of Ron Goldstein doing a runner!

Due to a mishandling of the fuel control cocks by an inexperienced member of the crew the overload tanks were turned off before the main tanks were switched on and both engines failed from fuel starvation. The pilot, F/L. H. Franczak, ditched the aircraft in the sea off Roscoff and although he, the navigator, F/L. K S. Delbridge and an army signaler, Signaler II R B. Bennett survived, three others drowned.
