A long shot but does anyone by any chance have access to Illustrated magazines dated 14/06/41 and 08/08/41? These editions have the story of Alf Tighe's walk across the desert after an action against Italian SF at Jebel Sherif (as per Kuno's excellent Incident at Jebel Sherif). Ideally, as I can't find the magazines for sale, I'd like to obtain good quality scans of these issues if possible. At the moment I only have the cover of one in low res ...

    Cheers

    Hi

Sorry, all I can add is that I believe he was killed when his jeep ran over a mine near Corinth in Greece on 10th October 1944.

Yes that's right Gus. A very much liked individual within the unit by all accounts so would like to track these articles down.

Going through the NLA to WorldCat shows that the only libraries holding this magazine are in Australia and New Zealand. Odd for a pommie publication....

Anyhoo, the copies in Australia are in the AWM & the NLA in Canberra, a WA university & the State Library of Victoria (their editions are listed - the ones you want are not held there).

If it's important enough it might be worth contacting the relevant organisations in Australia and New Zealand to see if (a) they have the particular editions you are chasing and (b ) if they will scan the pages you want and email them to you.

    cheers & good luck

Dave - cheers for that. By 'a WA university' do you mean Western Australia or West Auckland? I have contacts in NZ so am just thinking if I can locate the library over there this may well be the route to take ...

Seriously, West Auckland has a university?

WorldCat shows the following holders for NZ: the National Library of New Zealand - Wellington Service Centre & the Auckland Libraries service. I can't work out what copies either of them hold though (the way I read it, Auckland Libraries only hold the coronation edition from 1953).

Cheers Skip - if all else fails (if the NZ libraries don't have the copies you want) then get back to me.

I can try reaching out to people interstate, either getting someone to pop into the AWM to find the editions you want or by phoning / emailing the relevant people to try to get it done directly by library staff.

Dave - thanks very much for the offer. I'll give it a whirl and get back to you if I get no joy.

The story was reported in Aussie newspapers of the day (umpteen publications carried it word for word, with a few also having a cropped version of the photo from the cover of the magazine you provided).

(Just noticed that Moore has his own Wiki page - interesting)

Maybe the central Queensland Herald archives have something - he comes up (above) on 1941 - 7 August 1941 (Page 19) Queensland Herald. Maybe worth a search for other dates.

Dave - yes the full story is very interesting indeed with Gdsm Easton unfortunately dying of the wounds he had born so well on the long walk. Moore seems something like of a legend himself.

Wills - thanks for the link. It's interesting that it received such wide reporting, hence my keenness to see the exact content of the Illustrated article.

Thanks for the compliment regarding Incident at Jebel Sherif, Skip. Unfortunately I do not have the full article either... I think the best chance is to get it from somebody in NZ. If you still need it let me know and I shall ask & try.

Skip - can you please do us all a favour and post the pages on this thread when (if) you get hold of them.

This is for two reasons -

first so I (for one) can have a read and find out more of this story

secondly, so if anyone is still chasing access for you via another method they can call off their dogs

cheers & good luck with the hunt

...the issue with this wartime publication: They were used also for encouraging the people at home and propaganda. So.... the content of the article is probably not as accurate as it could actually be ;-). When we (Brendan, Roberto and me) have worked for "Jebel Sherif", the story was thoroughly researched and "updated". I once wanted to do a proper article about "Moore's March" (although I do not like this title) but until present failed to do so... ;-(

    Dave et al,

Attached is the article as Kindly supplied by Kuno who, like he says, has continued to study the Jebel Sherif contact since the publication of his book. Bearing in mind his last post although the account is dry interesting it needs to be taken in context given the propaganda machine rolling at the time.

All the best and thanks to everyone for your replies - another very good reflection of the helpfulness of forum members

    Cheers
