Alwyne Short - died at H.M. Borstal, Portland

    He's named on Portland's war memorial, but how did he come to die in the borstal? Was it hit during an air-raid?

    Civilian SHORT, ALWYNE
    Died 15/08/1940

    Aged 19

    Civilian War Dead

    Son of Mrs. Hannah Heald (formerly Short), of 18 Church View, Barlborough, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Died at H.M. Borstal Institution.

    HM Prison Portland - Wikipedia

    On 15 August 1940, a raid saw the Borstal's Rodney House block bombed. This left four boys dead and others severely injured, including five being admitted to hospital.

    Thank you very much. Nice that Portland saw fit to include his name, and presumably the three others, on the memorial.

    Thanks, TD - all four are definitely named on the memorial.

    I wonder if their home towns/villages remembered them too. Anyone know if R.G.A. Claxton is on a memorial in Bury St. Edmunds?
