My Dad said that once they took on a detachment of Marines to escort an Italian sub that had surrendered. The only sub that I can find that surrendered near South Africa was the Ammiraglio Cagni the only ship listed as taking the surrender was HMS Jasmine. As my dad was on HMS Rockrose,I can not verify the story.
