July 26 1942 Lt.Col Valentine MBE assumed command of the 2nd Devons when Lt.Col R.F.B.Hill embarked to the UK (after arriving in the UK he assumed command of the 12th Battalion untill November 1943). He kept command although the rest of the Malta seige, through the sicily and Italian Landings and on their return to the UK untill March 12th when the Battalion were at Inverary, he then moved on to a staff appointment and Lt.Col C.A.R.Nevill OBE assumed command.
