Any ideas for Ghanm and Chanli from my grandfather's P.O.W. Questionnaire

  1. Dear All

My grandfather was in the Royal Artillery and captured at Singapore in February 1942. He was sent out from Sime Road camp in December 1942 he was sent out to Ghanm, between December 1942 to April 1943 (for his time working on the Burma Railway it simply says Thailand April 1943 to December 1943). He was part of the notorious F Force sent out to work on the Burma Railway, we know this from other records we have which detail the names of the train carriage on which he was sent out (including my grandfather) where around half of those sent out never returned. A search on the internet has not found anything for Ghanm and another place detailed on the form Chanli (I wondered if this might just be Changi) which he dates confusingly as March 1946 to September 1945! As he was at Sime Road between December 1943 to March 1943 (we presume he meant to write March 1944) we think he meant March 1944 to March 1945 at Sime Road.

Help in tracking down/finding out about Ghanm and Chanli would be much appreciated (are they simply wrong spellings or little known names?).

    Thanks

    Justin

I have updated this post to include a list of the Camp Leader's listed in the form against each camp other than Thailand (where he did not give the names of the individual camps):

Sime Road August 1942 to Dec 1942 Lt Col. Newey
Ghanm Dec 1942 to April 1943 Col Holmes M.C.
Thailand April 1943 to Dec 1943 Maj Rogers
Sime Road Dec 1943 to March 1944 or 5 (says 1943 obviously in error) Lt Col Newey
Chanli March 1944 or 5 (says 1946 in error) to Sept 1945 Lt Col Newy Col Holmes M.C.

    Hello Justin,

Welcome. Although I am not an expert on Far East' POWs, I read a terrible and fascinating book by one of our fellow members here on ww2Talk.com, concerning the fall of Singapore, the fate of its prisoners and especially the Burma Railway. There are many references to Changi (I am reading its index).

The title is "The Prisoner List", the author Richard Kandler and was published by Marsworth Publishing in 2010. Simply excellent. Therefore I warmly recommend you this book. :)

  3. Hi Marco

Thanks for the recommendation. I came across the author's website the other day and the book does look excellent.
