I am going to the Carinthia region of southern Austria next week and I wonder if anyone knows if there are any WW2 sites or museums with WW2 info therein, in particular with reference to those British units that ended up there at the end of the war. My father was with the 11th Field Amb which was part of the 78th (Battleaxe) Division. Thanks. Jeff P.S. Wasn't sure what heading to put this thread under, hence opted for "General".
You have the Plocken Pass where 56 Recce led the 78th Division into Austria: Spittal, site of the 78th victory parade: 78th British Infantry Division - "The Battleaxe Div" Sillian, site of the 56 Recce parade: 56th Reconnaissance Corps From the diaries of 56 Recce (part of 78 Inf Div) there are some operational instructions that mention medical facilities and one that mentions, briefly, 11 Field Ambulance: Enjoy your trip.
Many thanks for the info Tony. The reference to the Spittal parade rings a bell - I'm pretty sure I have a picture of that in my collection. There is a lot of info in the thread about the 78th Division. The 11th Field Amb were at Kotschach - I have a photo postcard where my Dad has written on the back to say that he is billeted there.
Not WW2 though. There is a private military fortification museum near the Slovenian border. It was there a few years ago and the name is lost in my memory. Ah, the wonders of Google! their website (in German) is: Bunkermuseum Wurzenpass – Österreichs Alpenfestung aus dem Kalten Krieg and an English info sheet: https://www.bunkermuseum.at/img/pdf/bunkermuseum_info_en.pdf It is on the Wurzenpass and TripAdvisor's last review was pre-Covid: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attra...seum-Arnoldstein_Carinthia_Austrian_Alps.html
