ARMOURED REPLACEMENT GROUP The Royal Armoured Corps had an organisation to supply replacement armoured vehicles and personnel for the armoured regiments and tank regiments, plus some other armoured formations. Each brigade was supported by an armoured delivery squadron which were in turn supported by corps and army squadrons.. ARMOURED REPLACEMENT GROUP HQ Armoured Replacement Group. War Establishment III/317/2. Armoured Reinforcement Unit. War Establishment III/318/1 Army/ Corp Delivery Squadron. War Establishment III/319/1 Forward Delivery Squadron. War Establishment III/105/1 In 21st Army Group the Armoured Replacement Group RAC played a vital role in keeping armoured units up to strength in both fighting vehicles and personnel. There was a small Armoured Replacement Group Headquarters which liaised with major headquarters and coordinated the work of the Armoured Delivery Regiment, the Armoured Refitting Unit and later the Armoured Reinforcement Unit as well. The Armoured Refitting Unit was created to put damaged fighting vehicles back into service as speedily as possible. Personnel were largely REME and RAOC. The Armoured Reinforcement Unit held reinforcement personnel. It also continued to train them in the tactical use of the vehicles they would eventually man. The Armoured Delivery Regiment was so large as to hardly be a regiment. Its role was to take vehicles from the Armoured Refitting Unit or from RAOC Armoured Vehicle Parks and deliver them to the fighting units. Personnel were also held and delivered. They came from the Armoured Reinforcement Unit or from tank crews who had lost their vehicles. Eventually the Armoured Delivery Regiment was responsible for twenty one Delivery Squadrons made up of - one Army Delivery Squadron - four Corps Delivery Squadrons - sixteen forward delivery squadrons each delivering to an armoured brigade. There were also delivery units delivering the specialised armour of the Assault Regiments Royal Engineers and Self Propelled Regiments Royal Artillery. The basic system was intended to ensure that vehicles and personnel reinforcements reached the armoured divisions. However there were in 21 Army Group more independent armoured brigades than there were divisional brigades. This was partly because divisions had been reduced from two brigades to one. Also there were Tank Brigades and specialised brigades. As the campaign progresses mixed formations of infantry, armour and other arms became the norm and the task of reinforcement was therefore more complex and more flexible. Vehicles were transported from Army Squadrons and Corps Squadrons to the Forward Squadrons by Tank Transporter Companies RASC. The Forward Squadrons were close enough to the front for the vehicles to be delivered/collected under their own power. Both the rear squadrons and the forward squadrons were equipped to maintain and service the vehicles, and to train the crews. Thus an armoured fighting vehicle ought to reach its user unit fully operational, fully equipped, fully crewed and probably fully fuelled and ammunitioned. An Armoured Vehicle Servicing Unit was later attached to the Armour Replacement Group in order to achieve the aim of delivering vehicles in perfect condition. Vehicles were fully serviced before leaving the vehicle parks but the Delivery Squadrons used them for training the crews who would later use them in action. Thus it was not possible to be certain that they were in perfect condition when they arrived with the user units. This servicing unit will be covered in a separate booklet. The Armoured Reinforcement Unit was created in early 1944 to administer and train Royal Armoured Corps reinforcements. Earlier organisations had given this task to the delivery squadrons, each pair of which administered and trained up to a hundred and twenty reinforcement personnel as well as replacement vehicles. The Armoured Reinforcement Unit could administer and train up to 600 reinforcement personnel. Reinforcements sound much better for morale than replacements. 21 Army Group had a diversity of armoured vehicles and the Armoured Reinforcement Unit had one squadron devoted to cruiser tanks, Sherman and Cromwell, while the other squadron was devoted to Churchill infantry tanks. The Royal Armoured Corps also trained armoured car crews. Since this is a training unit the permanent personnel only are shown on the War establishment tables. The reinforcement personnel will vary in numbers, ranks and trades but each squadron can handle up to 300 personnel. Personnel will have been fully trained in the UK and continuing training in the Armoured Replacement Unit was to - maintain the skills already acquired - make personnel familiar with any new equipment and modifications to existing equipment - familiarise personnel with new tactics - familiarise personnel with the terrain they will probably encounter. Continuous training was anyway held to be of prime importance by Montgomery. Training vehicles were held and maintained by the Headquarters Squadron. Personnel were sent to the delivery squadrons as required and would eventually reach units as replacement crews, or sometimes as complete crews with a replacement vehicle. Since many of the vehicles were new and the remained were from workshops little maintenance was required. There were always minor modifications to be made, traversing gear and hydraulic controls needed checking and oil levels needed topping up. Sometimes there was damage caused in transit to be repaired. The demand for servicing was such that two AFV workshops from advanced base workshops were also attached to carry out the work In practice the Armoured Replacement Group used newly delivered vehicles for driver training so that some servicing was required after the vehicles were delivered to them. Moreover the Armoured replacement group insisted on checking all vehicles (and units probably checked them again when they received them). The Armoured Replacement group eventually received a redundant 2nd line workshop to carry out repairs and servicing.
