Probably the best book on the status/ethos of 1st AB in the pre Arnhem period is the book called I think Arnhem the Airborne Battle by W Buckingham.....

    Thank you mate.

I've just found quite a few "Arnhem" related books for sale on EBay. If anyone's interested I've listed them all and their item numbers on the "For Sale & For Trade" thread.
    Paul..............
PS It's not me selling any of them by the way .....

    HI Paul,

Added 2 more to my collection Lloyd Clark Arnhem and A Magnificent Disaster David Bennett, what I did find interesting in the second one is at the back The Humiliation of General Sosabowski which I have read... As most of us know Browning after Arnhem needed a scapegoat and that was General Sosabowski, having read Freely I Served there is an interesting part in that about boats for the 1st Airborne Sosabowski travels to Brownings HQ telling him that he is holding a bridge head to use to get the 1st Airborne out... Browning turns to Sosabowski and tells him No and they had words it doesn't take much to work out what was said.. I always believe that General Sosabowski was trying to do the right thing for them and his man of The Polish Parachute Bridge and The 1st Airborne Division... Just my views abiut this...

    Cheers
    Tom

    Hello Tom,

I think you're right. Sosabowski was treated very badly and ultimately removed from Command of the Polish Brigade. If you can get hold of a copy of "Poles Apart" by George F Cholewczynski it's one of the best books on the subject, IMHO!:)

PS I don't know when you last checked the link to the books but I've added a few more recently! Keep up the book buying ;).

Hello, I'm a daughter of Piet (Pieter) Smit from Arnhem. My Dad helped the Red Cross bringing war victims to safety during the battle of Arnhem, long before I was born. If I remember well this was during the Market Garden operation. In later years, during the Airborne memorials in Oosterbeek, some Canadian veterans stayed at our place. I forgot their names and would like to get in touch with them to share memories of those days, since my Dad is no longer among us to tell me. Of course anyone who knew him is welcome to share their stories about my Dad.
    Thanks,

    Christel

    Christel.....

I wonder whether you have heard of the 'Lest We Forget' foundation based in Arnhem?

They may be able to help .....without names what you ask is I fear rather difficult.....the 'only' Canadians at Arnhem in September 1944 were mainly CANLOAN officers, but Canadian troops helped liberate the Arnhem area in 1945..it might be some of those.....
