Three photos of the drop on the heath, taken from Riegers camp at wolfhaze, no buses to catch, no stalls, no people, just what you would have seen in 44, in fact a elderly lady walking her dog was asked as she walked past us, had she noticed the chutes, she replied to upsetting to look, lived here remember it first time round, to many memories, did not look, walked on, regards lofty, (still waiting for photos from NL my friend emailed these today more to come soon) regards lofty

Just wanted to say thank you very much for uploading a photo of this plaque. Watched David Jason's Great Escapes last night and to our surprise saw my Grandad's name on a plaque - GE McCracken.

The attached extract is from one of the reports about the shooting and might assist.
It would appear that a German lorry was coming the other way when Tony Hibbert and Dennis Munford jumped, the guard on that lorry opened fire and it would appear that he accidentally shot the Luftwaffe guard in the back of the prisoner's lorry. The guard at the front reacted to this by emptying his magazine into the troops remaining in the back. Things could have been even worse but for a German officer who arrived at the scene and put an immediate stop to the shooting.

John, thanks for the info. Passed this on to my mum who is now going to join - she is researching this for our family tree. I'm amazed how much information is available about this.

I was invited to accompany Tony Hibbert on Friday afternoon when he went to Brummen to lay his wreath at the memorial. He noticed your cross and was delighted to see that somebody else had remembered his comrades. I'll send you some of the photos I took which you can pass on to Alison.
