I'm trying to find a bit of information about Stan Whittaker who served in the Parachute Regiment and was taken prisoner at Arnhem... that's all I know about him, and would like to find out, at least, which Battalion he served with?
Would this be him: S J Whittaker in the UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: S J Whittaker Rank: Private Army Number: 14618322 Regiment: Army Air Corps Record Office: Army Air Corps and Army Catering Corps Record Office, Drill Hall, East Claremont St., Edinburgh 9 Record Office Number: 45 TD
Could well be. Herself bought me a book for 20p from a charity shop, titled 'My War - Prisoner of War'. Private Whittaker is one of the blokes mentioned, frustratingly there are no details, other than a piccy showing him in a Beret with the Parachute Regiment cap badge, and.... The attack came in on a group of us. Luckily all the firing missed me. We just put our hands up. There was nothing else to do. I'd hazard a guess at 11th Battalion? Is there a way of finding out which Battalion he may have served in?
On his POW Liberation Questionnaire he put his unit as 4th Parachute Brigade HQ. I don't think he could have been any more explicit. He says that he was captured on the 20th. The only other S Whittaker at Arnhem was Solomon Whittaker from the South Staffords - he wouldn't have a Para cap badge.
You mean this guy Name: S Whittaker Rank: Private Army Number: 4914442 Regiment: South Staffordshire Regiment POW Number: 92098 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: XII-A Camp Location: Limburg, Baden-Württemberg Record Office: Infantry Record Office, Shrewsbury, Shropshire Record Office Number: 19 TD
TD That's him - he was in A Coy South Staffords but they wore their own cap badge not the Parachute Regiment Cap Badge. He was captured on the 26th.
The book's photograph shows him wearing a Parachute Regiment cap badge, so I'd hazard the 4th Parachute Brigade is the chap I'm after?
