Italy, 1st May to 31st August 1944

This officer carried out personally all forward area reconnaissance of Railway demolitions required by his Group throughout the advance from Cassino to the outskirt of Florence.

His duties required that he would keep up with the forward troops at all times, travelling along the railways, noting demolitions and passing to Group H.Q. detailed reports to enable repair plans to be formulated with minimum delay.

He frequently worked alone, away from the main body of troops in areas in subject to shellfire, heavily mined, and work also included the reconnaissance of partly demolished tunnels which were frequently booby trapped.

His fearlessness, the excellence and accuracy of his reports and his tireless energy ensured that repair work could be started with full effect as soon as the areas were cleared of the enemy, so ensuring the earliest possible rail supply to the Armies on the important Rome – Florence line

He was wounded while passing through a minefield near Empoli on 31st August 1944 and was evacuated to hospital.
