RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AWARDS

(1) After the Armistice with Italy, the Italian Commandant of this camp handed over to the Senior British Officer, who organised P/W into companies and ordered them to be ready to march out at five minutes’ notice on the sounding of the alarm by the camp bugler. The alarm was sounded at 1300 hours on 9th September 1943 and everything went according to plan.

(2) I recommend the following officers for the awards shown, brief particulars being given in the enclosures stated opposite their names:-

Lieut. PALMER was captured on 21st November 1941 at SIDI REZEGH and was imprisoned at CAPUA, PADULA and FONTANELLATO (Camp 49).

On 9th September 1943 when Camp 49 was evacuated, Lieut. PALMER travelled with one other officer to LIVORNO, where they unsuccessfully attempted to obtain a boat. Turning south-east, Lieut. PALMER was recaptured by Germans on 6th November at VENAFRO. Two days later he escaped from the German H.Q. at VELLETRI and had reached FONTANA LIRI in an attempt to arrive at CASSINO, when the weather broke and he became ill. On 26th May 1944 he made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the lines, but two days later, he and an American officer met Allied troops after a few hours travelling.

I know a lot about Lt. Palmer. His testimony provided the key piece of evidence - a map reference - which enabled the identification of the temporary burial place of Ldg. Tel Victor James Crosby and the subseqent correct identification of Crosby's grave in Cassino War Cemetery. I will send a copy down to my friends at Fontana Liri who first "introduced" me to Palmer.
