Award Military Cross Major Charles Peter Dryland, 7 Bn Royal Welch Fusiliers (137500)

On the morning of the 17th July 1944 the Battalion was ordered to withdraw from the MONDEVILLE FM feature 9359. This involved a difficult movement over open country overlooked by the enemy. During this operation the Commanding Officer was seriously wounded. Lieut Dryland who, an IO, was accompanying him conducted the withdrawal from this point onwards. Although continually under heavy fire, he showed the greatest coolness, bringing down artillery fire and smoke, and controlling the movement of any disorganised parties which had been cut off from their companies. Lieut Dryland conducted the battle with a shrewdness far beyond his years and experience and materially contributed to the successful conclusion of the operation.
