Award Military Medal Sgt. William Cloves, 2nd Parachute Battalion, 1st Parachute Brigade, 46 Division, V Corps (5171257)

For most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

Between the 7th Mach - 18th March 1943. The Battalion was in position on a feature called Sidi Mohamed Belkassem (Tunisia Sheet 10).

During this time the positions were heavily attacked by the enemy and two battalion area was constantly shelled and mortared. On several occasions the telephone lines were cut by enemy fire; without hesitation Sergeant Cloves went forward under heavy fire to restore communications. During the whole period, in spite of having a depleted Signal Section, losses or equipment and continuous enemy action, communications were established and kept between Company Headquarter’s and Battalion Headquarters. This was very largely due to the increasing efforts, leadership, courage and endurance showed by Sgt. Cloves.
