    Felix Salten - Wikipedia

"His best remembered work is Bambi (1923). It was intended by Salten as a parable of the dangers and persecution faced by Jews in Europe.[2] A translation in English was published by Simon & Schuster in 1928, and became a Book-of-the-Month Club success. In 1933, he sold the film rights to the American director Sidney Franklin for only $1,000, and Franklin later transferred the rights to the Walt Disney studios, which formed the basis of the animated film, Bambi (1942).
Life in Austria became perilous for Jews during the 1930s. In Germany, Adolf Hitler had Salten's books banned in 1936. Two years later, after Germany's annexation of Austria, Salten moved to Zurich, Switzerland, with his wife, and spent his final years there. Felix Salten died on 8 October 1945, at the age of 76. He is buried at Israelitischer Friedhof Unterer Friesenberg."

Outlook - I was the voice of Bambi – and kept it secret for years - BBC Sounds

"Donnie Dunagan was born in 1934 and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, in the midst of the Great Depression. After winning a talent show aged four he was scouted and whisked to Hollywood where he starred in several movies – including a role as the voice of Walt Disney’s iconic animated deer Bambi in 1942. But WWII would put a halt to his movie career, and Donnie eventually became a US Marine – never telling anyone about his Hollywood history until he was publicly unmasked in 2004. On the 80th anniversary of Bambi's release, he shares his story. Every other year, someone is awarded 'Disney Legend' status for having made an extraordinary contribution to the Walt Disney Company. Floyd Norman is one of the chosen few. In 1956, he became the studio's first African American animator and worked on some of its most iconic creations. He spoke to Outlook's Maryam Maruf in 2016."

Seriously... - Bambi: The True Story - BBC Sounds

    Bambi: The True Story
    Released On: 11 Apr 2023
    Available for 25 days
Most of us are familiar with the figure of Bambi - the wide-eyed young fawn at the centre of Walt Disney's heart-warming 1942 animation, who finds love and friendship in the forest as he comes to terms with growing up. However, few people are aware of Bambi's roots - as an unflinching and grisly parable about the violence of nature and the cruelty of man, which has more in common with Animal Farm than with Dumbo. It is a work red in tooth and claw, where animals discuss the experience of "being born to be killed". It is also largely forgotten. Cultural historian Christopher Frayling travels to Vienna to tell the true story of Bambi. Disney's Bambi was based on the 1928 American translation of Austrian writer Felix Salten's Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest, originally published in Vienna in 1922. This translation toned down the darker aspects of Salten's story, to turn Bambi into a children's book about furry animals and their friends. This may have been an astute commercial move, but latest research suggests that Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest, in its original form, was an allegory of the persecution of Jews in Europe. Over 100 years on from the publication of Salten's book, it is time to tell the true story of Bambi. Walt Disney: A Life in Films - 5. Bambi - BBC Sounds

Through the stories of ten of his greatest works, Mel Giedroyc examines the life of Walt Disney, a much mythologised genius. A man to whom storytelling was an escape from an oppressive father and a respite from periods of depression.
His name is truly iconic, but how much do we really know about this titan of the entertainment industry? Who was the real Walt and why did a man who moulded Western pop culture in his image end up on his deathbed, afraid that he’d be forgotten?
In this episode, Mel invites you into the woods to explore Disney’s Bambi, a deeply moving film following the story of an orphaned deer as he discovers the joys of nature and faces the dangers of hunters and the harshness of winter.
We hear how Walt obsessed over the realism of the animation, bringing live animals into the studio to act as models for his staff. At one point a rutting stag broke loose, causing havoc, but the end result is a sumptuously beautiful film. Under the surface however, Walt endured a torrid time, taking out hefty bank loans in order to finance the project which massively overran.
It has since been acknowledged as a classic, but Bambi received a muted response from the critics. Hugely impacted by the ongoing Second World War, Bambi didn’t even come close to breaking even on its initial release. Clearly, Walt needed a new approach if his studio was to survive.
