Guys I have been looking for a book I read as a kid. I don't remember the title but I thought it was a Bantam War Book. The storyline went something like this:

A navy pilot is wounded and shot down. He manages to get to an island where he finds the remains of a coastwatching station. He starts becoming a coastwatcher alerting Guadalcanal of incoming ships and planes. He eludes the Japanese and is eventually rescued.

Anyone know the title of the book? I read it about 30 or so years ago. Thanks!

I´m still working on it. Some of the titles posted in this thread were from "Ballantine War Book", another very good series, or were from Osprey.

    Paul -
finally getting a word in- bit astonished that you have never read Bob Crisp's "Brazen Chariots" - one of my favourite books - but then it's about Tank warfare in the Desert with 1st Tanks and ends as he is about to be operated on after a wound had gone septic ... quite a funny account on how Tanks were operated before Monty - "Crispy" survived to lead 1st Tanks into Normandy - and survived the war as an original...excellent read..
    Cheers
