The Battle of Clifton Moor, Cumbria (sometimes referred to as a "skirmish") was the last time two armies clashed on English soil. * On 18 December 1745 the Hanoverian army under the Duke of Cumberland (shortly to earn the nickname "Butcher") caught up with the rearguard of the retreating Jacobean army under Bonnie Prince Charlie. The fighting lasted around half an hour with about a dozen casualties on each side.

The Jacobite soldiers killed in the battle were buried in a field marked by a tree which has been known ever since as the "Rebel Tree". The Hanoverian troops killed were laid to rest in the parish churchyard of St Cuthbert's. The men were troopers of "Bland's Regiment". In 2004 the Queen's Royal Hussars (a successor regiment to that of "Bland's") erected a memorial stone in the churchyard to the fallen troopers of 1745. The memorial stone is similar in shape and size to the standard Commonwealth War Graves headstone.

    * [Clifton Moor is generally regarded as the last battle fought on English soil. However, there are some who make the case that it was actually the Battle (or "skirmish") of Graveney Marsh on 27 September 1940. During the Battle of Britain a German Junkers 88 crash-landed on Graveney Marsh, Kent. After being grounded the German aircrew exchanged fire with a detachment of the London Irish Rifles. After a short battle the Germans surrendered].
