Currently (at 25th March 2018) on the BBC Radio Iplayer:

BBC Radio 4 Extra - A Tribute to Leslie Howard

BBC Home Service tribute to 'Gone with the Wind' film star, Leslie Howard, broadcast to mark his tragic wartime death on 1st June 1943 - when his flight from Lisbon to London came under attack from enemy aircraft. The plane went missing and was assumed lost.

Born on 3rd April 1893, Howard started as a bank clerk, but went on to become a huge cinema box office draw in the 1930s.

Writer JB Priestley, who broadcast with Howard many times, pays tribute.

    Narrator: Joseph MacLeod
    Written by Basil Woon.
    Producer: Laurence Gilliam

First broadcast on the BBC Home Service on 6th June 1943.

Although he was in Gone With The Wind. I remember Howard for his roles in The Petrified Forest (which made Bogart a star), The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Pygmalion.

According to Wikipedia, Howard insisted on Bogart being in the film version of Petrified Forest after their Broadway run. Without that... Maybe we wouldn't have had Bogart the film star quite as we did. Bogart and his wife Bacall named their daughter Leslie Howard Bogart.

I was wondering why it was scheduled today on R4extra - so listened to it and it did mention The Petrified Forest quite a bit - not a film I am too familiar with - though I had heard of Gone With the Wind ;-)

Edit - 3rd April is / was his birthday so perhaps because now we are close to it.

I should have also noted the film The First of the Few (released as Spitfire in the USA) in which he played R. J. Mitchell, the designer of the Spitfire. I only watched that recently after it was mentioned here.

And I really do love The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Just on the chance that there might be something more scheduled in the near future ;-) I did a search on the Iplayer and saw this below was last broadcast: Thu 6 Nov 200814:15 - and so is not currently available, but will hopefully, perhaps, be rebroadcast someday in the not too distant future.

    The Wrong Hero?
    Afternoon Drama
Mark Burgess's drama re-imagines the circumstances surrounding the death of film star Leslie Howard, whose plane was shot down by German fighters in 1943. Howard and his business manager Alfred Chenhalls - who bore a striking resemblance to Winston Churchill - were on their way back to England from Lisbon after a speaking tour. Could their plane have been targeted in a case of mistaken identity?

    Leslie Howard ...... Simon Williams
    Alfred Chenhalls ...... Kenneth Cranham.

There is, I think too, a documentary on the theory / theories behind the attack: BOAC Flight 777 - Wikipedia

i.e. to Quote - "In 2003, on the 60th anniversary of the downing of Flight 777, a pair of television documentaries on the subject were released: the BBC series Inside Out and the History Channel's Vanishings! Leslie Howard – Movie Star or Spy?"

And a lot of hypothesis: Leslie Howard (actor) - Wikipedia

Though hearing the BBC Home Service tribute to Leslie Howard - First broadcast on the BBC Home Service on 6th June 1943 - was interesting.
