    Drew:

That is marvelous work - you have wonderful sources, and I'm quite jealous of your ability to access this level of detail (when the leg mends).

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Hi John,

The current prediction is I won't be walking unaided until around May so I don't expect to be visiting Kew again until the second half of this year.

Hi there, thanks for the offer of war diaries but might I ask for a little advise before requesting them please.
This is my first visit to the site and so I am a novice and may just request the wrong thing.
I am trying to find out what happened to my father who was in the RASC and went to France in January 1940. His army records show that he was posted to 1st Corps Petrol Park in February 1940. If I asked for a copy of WO 167/143Copied is it likely that this diary will give me an idea of what
happened to him between that dated and when he
was evacuated from DUnkirk on 31 May?
    Thank you

    Hello,

WO 167/143 are indeed the I Corps Petrol Park diary. I have that diary already and there is 183 pages of information inc the diaries themselves from Sept 39 to evacuation on 28th May via the Malo breakwater at 1700 hrs.

I'm assuming you have his service records? Do you know who he was with before I Corps Petrol Park?

I'm happy to send you a copy of the file if I can trust you to make a donation to a British military charity?

    Regards
    Andy

Thank you -(it has taken me all this time to find my post again!)
Of course I will make a donation as soon as I receive it. - we have just raised £250 for help for heros at my daughter's wedding!
Yes, I have his records, the entries read as follows
    Disembarked 13.1.40
Posted X list No 1 Gen base depot w.e.f 15.1.40
Posted 1st Corp Petrol Park wef 2.2.40
    Forfeits 3 days pay 29 2 40
Evacuated to UK sos of bef wef 31.5.40

I think these were the first entries, I can't see any earlier dates apart from date of enlistment, embarked 11.1.40, V/M (vehicle mechanic) Class 1, Gp "A"

I have little idea what any of it means and he would say very little except that I think he was up near Gavrelle.

I am very grateful for any help
    Thank you

    Hi,

You may wish to consider this diary too:

    WO 167/119 1 General Base Depot. 1939 Sept.-1940 June

Sadly I don't have that one yet so can't say what it's like but I'm a believer in leaving no stone unturned-You never know whats hiding in these files.

If you PM me you address I'll put the Petrol Park disc onto disc and get it in to the post for you ASAP. I am currently house bound though due to a broken leg so its a case of when I can get some one to post it (Less than a week)

    Cheers
    Andy

    Thank you so much
I am rather reluctant to leave the page in case I never find it again!
Perhaps, once I am a little more au fait with the site and your leg is better, I can come back and request 167/119 1.
I will now endeavour to send you a private message and once again, thanks so much.

Thanks Sylvie for letting me know and hope the disc is of great use to you.

Just as a side note to anyone else wanting any diaries, sadly for reasons I'll keep personal I'm discontinuing this offer as of today but will of course honour those that have alreay asked and posted requests for BEF diaries.

On a positive note I will be continuing to visit the NA when my leg is better and will offer to copy 'any diaries or files at the National Archives' for members-see the link below in my signature.

If any one is interested in any diaries or files being copied for them in the future, please feel free to drop me a PM. I suspect I'll be able to start visiting the NA again in March/April.

    Cheers
    Andy

After some excellent trips to the National Archives in recent times I've decided to collect all 1,500 files in the WO 167 series. I've done around 60 to date - complete.

If anyone wants a copy of a particular diary that starts with WO 167, let me know on this thread and I'll get if for you. It shouldn't take any longer than four weeks for me to copy a file and then send it to you on disc.

There is however a slight catch. I don't want anything for them as I'm collecting them for myself but I thought on receipt of the file you could make a donation (amount of your chossing) to one (or all 4 if your feeling flush) of the four charities listed below that I support or have supported in the past.

    1. Army Benevolent Fund

    2. The Royal British Legion

    3. Help for Heroes

    4. Sailors, Soldiers & Air Force Association

    Soldiers’ Charity :: Home

Homepage - Welcome to The Royal British Legion - Caring and campaigning for the serving and ex-Service community - The Royal British Legion

Help for Heroes - A charity for the wounded in Britain's current conflicts

    Get involved

    Cheers
    Andy

A fourth worthy charity added at the request of a member on here.

For Ref here is all the War Diaries available for France 1939-1940. Please quote the file ref number and title when asking as I have to order the file by the number not name.

    Andy,
My father was posted to 1 GBD in Oct 1939 and No1 POW Camp in Dec 1939. He was evacuated in Jun 1940. based on your list he was with either 101 POW camp or 1 Mil Prison. I would appreciate it if you could send me a copy of WO 167/1360 and WO 167/1534. I live in Australia and would be happy to pay postage and make the requisite donation. if you can help I will PM you a postal adress.

Hi, would it be possible to get a copy of WO/167/719 please? Its no 720 on your listing, and '1st queens own cameroon highlanders'. Think youve already got it copied. My friend wanted to know about what her dad did, and this site is fantastic. More so because someones already enquired about their dad in the same battalion, so a lot of work saved! A respectable donation will deposited sir! Thanks, Russ

    Hi Andy,

I just got a quote back from the Nat. Archives for a digital copy of WO 167/766 (5th King's Own Royal). They want an amazing 630£ or so. Is this what you paid for your copy? I would feel I should need to contribute to your cost if I asked you for a copy.

PS If anyone else is (or is likely) to want this war diary, then of course I could buy it and put it in the public domain.
