Im really hoping someone might be able to help me find out some information about my grandad . I lost my mum just over two years ago and my aunt isnt very helpful in providing any information about my grandad who I was very close to when I was young . I guess like most servicemen he never really spoke about the war to me and its always sad that as a child its something that your not interested in learning about until its too late to actually ask the person . The only thing I really know is he was a stretcher bearer and ive just one old photo of him in his uniform which from certain insignia I can make out is he displays five stripes on his cuff which I believe is the number of years he was in the service and his shoulder insignia visable shows the letters ( TSHIRE ) which I can only presume is the Wiltshire regiment . Ive tried typing his name into certain sites but didnt find out anything , any sugestions would be most useful and i,d be very grateful , many thanks . Martin

    Welcome aboard, Marty.

The best place to start is definitely applying for his service records. The process is explained here:

https://www.gov.uk/g...e-elses-records - the time it takes to receive them varies wildly, but they're sounding quite promising lately: weeks if you're lucky, a few months if you aren't.

You might also start a thread in the Research Section using the format given in the first post here:
    http://ww2talk.com/f...-the-following/

Such posts often generate helpful information and links from the experts here.

It might also help if you could upload the photograph to this board. It's conceivable that he could actually be recognised by another poster, or that a clue you have missed might get spotted.

Best of luck - there's an awful lot you can discover once you have the basic skeleton from the service records.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum.

Applying for his service record is the best way forward. £30 well spent (plus cost of a death certificate).

Have you excluded the possibility of him being with The Dorsetshire Regiment? They were only renamed Dorset Regiment in 1951.

    Good Luck

    Hi Marty

    Welcome

It would be helpful to have his name, and any other information you have on him, date of birth etc - it all helps to ensure we are looking for the right man.

As Tullybrone has said the best and really only place to start your military search is with his service records

I've been squinting at the badge on the shoulder (correct orientation here):

It may be my imagination - some kind of Rorschach test - but I might see an animals head of some description facing left (the viewer's) right with jaws open. Alternatively, it could be blank and dirty! Can anybody with photoshop skills play with the image to make the badge - or any contrast within it - stand out more clearly?

I can't find an obvious match here:
    http://www.petergh.f2s.com/flashes.html

But it could be Indian Army....

CL0134A-150x150.jpg Thanks for that TD , for some reason my ancestry isnt working at the moment so didnt have all the exact dates , but all the details as above are correct , thanks again , I found this image on google so thats the reasoning behind the Wiltshire theory .

No expert here, but a little Googling suggests that - official name notwithstanding - their badges read 'Dorset' or 'Devon & Dorset'.

    The Wiltshire Regiment looks likely.

I think that the lower square maybe the maroon square of the Wiltshires & the divisional insignia maybe the drum of 45th Division.
I'd suggest that would make him a member of 7th Bn Wilts.

edit: I admit this to be a wild guess based on little info . just a hunch :)

Looks like Wiltshire to me for my 2 cents worth.

How many other possibilities is there?

    Dorsetshire?
    Shropshire?
    Yorkshire?

Hi everyone and thanks again for helping me with my research of my late grandad . I finally heard back from kentigern house and im so pleased with what they have supplied me even though I only made a general enquiry its been most helpful . I'm just wondering how now is the best way of further researching the information provided to me , a lot of the documents are hard to read and as we thought from the photo he was a member of the wiltshire regiment it appears he was only transfered there in 1944 and a document states he served in n/w europe for 260 days . It appears he was in the territorial army from 1940 to 1944 when in june of that year he seems to be to europe till march 1946 . There is also a line stating he sustained injuries of a serious nature on boxing day of 1945 then examined fit for further service on the 1st of march 1946 .From my understanding before transfereing to the 4th wiltshires he was in the south staffordshire regt and it also states he seamed to do a lot of stretcher bearer courses which makes sense as its the only thing he ever told me he had done during the war . If anyone can advise me if any of this seems to make sense and if its possible I can possibly find out how he was injured and where abroad he might have served . His service number is 4460241 James Tyrer posted to 307th infantry training centre . Thanks to everyone on the site that has helped in the past , regards , martin .

    Hi Martin
I've moved your thread to the Service Records area.

If you can either scan or take photos of the records and then post them up as attachments, other members will be able to see what might be of use for you in trying to create a narrative out of the entries.

    Best of luck

    Marty,
Is there an `enlistment` form amongst the records? There should be something to record his DLI enlistment but it doesn't appear on the above records?

Hi Kyle , the only other doc's ive got are attached , i'm not sure if I would have got a lot more information if i'd applied for a next of kin search but my aunt is the next of kin and i'd wait for years for her to do anything about it hence ive only been able to apply for a general enquiry . Thanks for your reply its much appreciated .
