Within Beirut City, and to the south-west of the Beirut Pine Forest Park, can be found 5 cemeteries: the main Beirut Muslim cemetery and 2 CWGC and 2 French (Military) cemeteries - refer to image 07 for map. The CWGC WW1 Cemetery ajoins a French military cemetery to the north of Jaloul (Hassan Khaled) Street, and directly across the street can be found the CWGC WW2 and remaining French military cemetery. Set back about 50 mtrs from the main road and directly opposite the walled-entrance to the WW1 cemetery, over 560 men and women from Australia, New Zealand, UK, India, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, various African countries, Iraq, Poland, Czechslovakia and Trans-Jordan have found their final resting place here. There are 4 memorials also located within the cemetery confines: Beirut Cremation Memorial WW2 with 250+ names Hindus Memorial 1914 -1918 with 70+ names Indians Moslims Memorial 1914 -1918 with 30+ names Egyptian Labour Corps Memorial 1914 -1918 with 170+ names note; I'm informed that the Old Turkish Memorial 'disappeared ' sometime in the mid-70s Images are now available covering all these headstones and engraved names on the various memorials.
