These two are for Peter - I especially like the first one...

The first image is of an LB.30B the letters of the serial AM can just be made out.

I was thinking of posting that picture yesterday mate. It's the Grand Slam bomb isn't it? Something like 32,000lbs if memory serves me well

    Cheers

The fins were off set to impart spin into the bomb , dropped from altitude it would bury itself deeply before exploding.
When Tirpitz was hit she turned turtle into a crater created on the floor of the Fjord by a near miss.
They finally had something which could crack open the U-boat pens.

That is a very good photo - the Italians made some good planes .

The Liberator .....I don't know how they are going to fill in the insurance claims form.... "it was then the dog ran out in frony of me and I just touched the brakes ever so gently"

The forerunner of all B-24 Liberators. The prototype XB-24 serial 39-680 from which all B-24s developed.

Here are 3 interesting bomber pictures:

Secondly - A photo of the frrst ever Boeing B17 - taken during early 1939.

    Lastly - A redoubtable Halifax...

And for Adriano I have these two photo`s of Savoia Marchetti`s.

    1. The SM79 which became arguably the most successful Italian bomber of World War II, with some 1,350 of all variants being built. This well loved and rugged aircraft served with many other airforces other than with the Regia Aironautica and astonishingly this included the RAF. Apparently 117 Squadron operated 4 ex- Yugoslavian SM79`s in the middle-east.

    2. The SM84 which was the unsuccessful successor to the SM79 which although more powerful and better armoured proved to be far less reliable...

Two from K.Merrick , the photo from the Brown Collection , now under the care of the RAF Museum Hendon.

JD146 of 10 Squadron attacked by a Ju-88 on 2/8/43 over Hamburg - the fighter was shot down - the aircraft damaged crash landed and was repaired - she was later lost on Berlin on 22/23-11-43.
    (IWM)

The loss of the front turret , the more streamlined turret with 4 rather than 2 x .303's can be seen.
In effect the loss of the front turret brought with it the redistribution of the .303's to where they would be of most use - an attack from the rear - no one knew about "slanting music" at the time.

Some great pictures showing my favourite German bomber of the Second World War - the versatile Heinkel HE-111.

I would consider a Liberator, Mark VI - H310 - Z of 357 Squadron the best Bomber of WW2. In Aug, 1945, my F-i-L completed his tour in it. It would be nice to picture it.
