HOI2 DD is a fatastic game. It has relative high realism for a computer game, and put you in situations that are similar to the strategic issues during the war.

Sadly it is extremely addictive and is hard to put away for the night. However it leave you to ponder during a dull day at work how to stall the Axis march through Asia until you can releive the hard pressed forces there.

My big issue on this game is the Land Doctrines for all nations bar the Germans. It is highly a-historic and leave an impression that the other forces were rubbish. But for gaming purposes I can accept it, since it give the Germans a fighting chance in the early war years.

I would say that the best PC Games I have ever played (at a tactical level) for realism are:

COMBAT MISSION (SERIES) - truely superb
CLOSE COMBAT (SERIES) - very good

Both of these have an Eastern Front title.

I have not personally played this game, but it looks excellent:

THEATRE OF WAR - YouTube - Theatre of War www.gameprotv.com

I generally do not play 'grand strategy' games eg. regiment, divisions as counters etc. However, i am sure their are some very good titles.

Also, it is worth noting my criteria for a good game rests solely on these criteria:

    1. Must be strategy
    2. Must pass a good graphics threshold
    3. Must be as realistic as possible

There are some games which are very good games with excellent graphics and strategy; but they are only games and do represent the reality of warfare and merely rely on a WW2 theme.

I agree completely with you. I run a Combat Mission group called the Few Good Men. We try and play Combat Mission within its historical context with lifelike maps etc of the regions and using campaigns like the attack on Crete in '41 etc.

Im also a playtester for Matrix Games and recently tested Close Combat: Cross of Iron which is basically an update of their Russian Front version of the game. It is enjoyable but the graphics are still a bit too small for my liking.

As for Theatre of War... I had that... wonderful graphics... terrible gameplay. Avoid at all costs. IMO Battlefront have not released a good game since the Comvbat Mission series with bith Theatre of War and Combat Mission Shock Force being real damp squibs.

I would recommend Company Of Heroes. An excellent real time strategy game which gives you the opportunity to play as the U.S. forces, British forces or The Axis.

Strategy is really the key-word here, you have to decide wisely how you will build up your team, because it will surely affect you in one way or the other if you do not do it properly.

When starting to build your base, you are given the option to choose between Artillery, Airforce og Armory. Every one of these has it's advantages (or disadvantages) depending on the map, but also depending on what team you may have by your side.

All in all it's an absolutely great game which I often tend to play. It gives you a really good sense of how much strategy is needed in order to win a battle. Because you have to decide whether to rush the opposite team but risk getting annihilated, or build a defense to outhold the enemy but risk losing territory.

Eastern Front, turn based and annoying but unusually addictive. T-34 FOR THE WIN fight the various campaigns of ww2 russia on either side. take objectives and keep them at all costs.

Hearts of Iron II Doomsday is an awesome game. But the learning curve is steep.

I have not been big on games for the PC but have enjoyed the Blitzkrieg Series when modded and mapped with a historic setting. It's fun taking MarK VIs into Battle to the tune of Panzer Lied using operation Hagelsturm Mod....The series has an editor which presents endless possibilities.

I play CoD 2 online. However, during the regular game play, when the missions are over, it seems too soon. You are left wanting more action. Just my opinion though. Playing online is fun, but there's not a lot of strategy going on. Just people running around killing, which is what I like. There are some sniper servers that take a bit of thinking and getting used to. I like those too, but I really like running around killing as many people as I can. To each their own.

Im currently playing Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30.
Although the graphics arent top notch, the gameplay is superb. A very realistic game. Its not just a usual FPS, as you have to command squads by using them to suppress the enemy while you find a flank. I bought this game for 3 pounds (preowned) from amazon. 9/10.

Also i have call of duty, cod 2, cod4 and cod 5 on xbox 360. Play them all online which is great fun but far too addictive. MOH:AA is a classic with the omaha beach landing being a great level.

Sorry I if chip in with a huge deficit of knowledge on the subject , but am also looking for a decent PC modern era wargame (WW2, Korea, Indochina...)

Since its the only stuff I have right now, I play "Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots", and unless if feel like a God with a knack for having its own civilization, I tamper with the settings so I can fight my own sort of Beda Fomm or Guadalcanal without having to worry about civilians.

Are the strategy games mentioned like RoN in the way the are played?

Rise of Nations is a RTS correct? If that is the case I would recommend you get Company of Heroes and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. You can get a DRM version for only $10 here,

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II - GOG.com

It might be hard to find in stores, it takes some time to get used to it but it's definetly a fun game.

Talking about my ignorance... What´s an RTS? Real time simulator? (Must say that the term came to my mind without fully understanding its meaning )

    Real Time Strategy.

I can highly recommend Company of Heroes. A brilliant game in my opinion.

Are there PC games that include the war in the CBI? I mean, Commonwealth units against the Nips?

I doubt their are any about Commonwealth units, much like Hollywood, game developers don't care much about creating games about the contributions of the commonwealth. Their might be some "homegrown" titles from Asian, African, and possibly European developers about their respective countries contributions, but even then it's still a stretch.

Any nation in particular your looking for or just in general?

I´ve always been more interested in the Pacific and CBI than Europe; would rather play a recreation of the XIV Army campaigns, or Guadalcanal, than Overlord, or Market Garden.

No country in particular, just good ol´ Defenders of Queen and Country (Brit, Anzac, Indian, Canuck, etc.) on Nip warfare. A sprinkling of conflict against the Italians in the Med would be very acceptable, too.

The strategy game Blitzkrieg was really fun. Blitzkrieg 2 was great with 360 degree, full 3-D modelling, though it hanged on my PC and I had to settle with the first Blitzkrieg. As far as I know, I think there was a collection of the first one, including all the expansions.

I script for BK and all its expansions and I can promise you it is still going strong. We have just brought a new portal online. The forums are going well and the downloads are again taking shape. But sorting through 10gb of maps, skins, sounds, tutorials and mods is a bit of a nightmare.
