This week a WW2 bomb was found in Bethnal Green and subsequently caused a lot of disruption whilst it had to be deactivated and removed. This caused a bit of a discussion with my mother as it made headline news. The bomb was discovered a few streets away from where my mother had lived with her parents, thus it rekindled some memories.

By chance, looking on the internet, I came across a project that has been going on for a year or so to remember the victims of an early bombing tragedy when an Air Raid Shelter in the Bethnal green area sustained and direct hit, killing 40+ civilians.

On that night my mothers aunt had asked her sister to come with them to that particular shelter, and by chance they had declined and stayed put at home.

The aunt died in the shelter and is buried in a mass grave at the City of London Cemetery (230 people mentioned on the panels there).

For anyone who may have connections to this incident, who may have been unaware of the forthcoming memorial as we were, there will be a memorial unveiling on 7th September at the Rose Garden in Ravenscroft Park, Columbia Road at 14.00 hours. The memorial I'm informed is a black granite stone bearing the names of the victims.
