I viewed this presentation last night and found it to be quite emotional on both sides. I think the Australian War Memorial part of this documentary. (I missed a bit of the start and was interrupted during the credits) The photography, interviews and footage mix (real and staged) was really put together well. There was real footage of Australian aircraft dropping supplies from a level which looked no more than 20-30 feet off the ground as they did not use parachutes. I hope that it may be shown in the UK at some stage. YouTube - Beyond Kokoda History Channel Promo 3 A quote from a Japanese veteran seemed to sum it all up: Quote: Java was Heaven, Burma was Hell and New Guinea was Death??
I have to agree Spidge, I thought it was great programme, I felt the recostructed events were very well done. I prefer that style of programme with veterans over the ones that mix footage (often inaccurate) and breifly cover events.
The promo is tantalising. Footage I haven't seen. But do they really mean BEYOND Kokoda? Or the fight for the track itself? Because the fighting after the track was recovered was truly terrible. Places like Milne Bay and Sanananda etc.

A quote from a Japanese veteran seemed to sum it all up: Quote: Java was Heaven, Burma was Hell and New Guinea was Death?? They replayed it again this afternoon and the actual quote from the Japanese veteran was: Java was Heaven, Burma was Hell and New Guinea is where nobody comes back alive
Another quote that was interesting (surprise - surprise) was that apart from the Japanese veteran community "Kokoda" has not been heard of in Japan.
This documentary has been nominated for an Australian Logie award. We love Concreteâ„¢ » Beyond Kokoda Nominated for a Logie! Seems they are negotiating to have a DVD out sometime this year. I watched it again the other night. Very moving!
I thought you should know that I've put Beyond Kokoda on Youtube as our DVD deal fell through. Enjoy. Stig Producer Beyond Kokoda

May I ask why they rejected it as I've seen worse on the documentary channels ? Regards Andy
The Australian War Memorial wants $35,000 for DVD rights on the world war 2 footage contained in the doco. We dont have that money so we cant proceed with the DVD. Its a pity as we have loads of material that probably wont see the light of day (56 interviews with veterans from both Japan and Australia). Anyway, enjoy Beyond Kokoda on Youtube while it lasts before I get some legal notice to take it down. Stig
Aren't there any Australian Millionaires prepared to stick a few bux into the charity tin for you or even government funding ? It's a shame because it really looks a cracking (I've still not watched it) documentary. Australia from what my brother keeps telling me (He lives in Sydney and Tasmania) and my father is one of the most patriotic countries in the world when it comes to looking after their Vets. Regards Andy
I just finished watching Beyond Kokoda on YouTube and thought that it was excellent. The Kokoda campaign is little known here in the US and this documentary helped to fill in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge of it. Can anyone recommend any good books, especially Australian, about Kokoda?
I would highly recommend 'A Bastard Of A Place' by Peter Brune, covers not just Kokoda but other parts of thr PNG campaign there are some others but that springs to mind.
Stig Just started watching episode 1 - excellent editing, its a real shame you cant get funding to pay for the rights / production etc. Regards Pete
