Hey y'all I recently bought a book call Cassino A Portrait of a Battle Its pretty good but I was wondering if there were any other books out there that have maybe a little better? Thanks for all your input! Hit'em hard and hit'em fast till they hope you don't come back. -Thunderbolt47
Hi Thunderbolt, Here are some in my library: The Battles for Cassino Author: Brigadier E.D.Smith Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York Copyright: 1975, 216 pp. The author, as a young officer, took part in the battles while serving with the Gurkhas. A well written account leading up to the Liberation of Rome. Cassino, The Hollow Victory Author: John Ellis Publisher: Aurem Press, London Copyright: 1984, 587 pp. The Battle of Cassino Author: Fred Majdalany Publisher: Ballantine Books, New York Copyright: 1957, 237 pp. Monte Cassino Authors: David Hapgood & David Richardson Publisher: Berkley Books, New York Copyright: 1984, 286 pp. The second mentioned I consider the best - but perhaps I am biased as it covers the part in which the regiment in which I served was involved. Your local ibray may well have have them on the shelves. Regards, Gerry
I also hear there is a 'Battleground Europe' book coming out on Cassino. I bought Ken Ford's Osprey book on Cassino, and aside from a couple of minor errors, thought it was one of the best overviews of the battle I had read.
A very good first-hand account is 'The Monastery' by Fred Majdalaney who was a company commander with 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers in the battle. He later wrote a good general book on the campaign.
Also good is the new "Monte Cassino" by Matthew Parker, which includes a lot of eyewitness accounts for the trench-eye view of the battle -- including Spike Milligan, who was evacuated out with shell-shock.
Found an unread perfect condition paperback of that in Wickes DIY store charity bookstall for 50p the other day. Thought I needed to re-read it.
I use John Ellis' "Cassino - The hollow victory " all the time as - like Gerry - we were there also and it is the best I have read having read most of the others - Majdelany come close also- mind you - unlike Gerry's 25 Tank Bde - we didn't get a mention as we were hiding at Prezenzano…until Frosinone…. Cheers
Surely the best book on Cassino I've ever read (keep reading and see if you're sharp enough to spot the subtle changes of tone). Has anybody read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies...? Source: NOTHING BUT!
