No bridge plans here but building a wall is under consideration.

A bridge across to N Ireland, sounds a great idea. Pitty, it will not happen before our trip around Scotland this year. So, we have to come again? Is there so much to see around Scotland for a mini group of 4 history minded and Hiking fanatics crouts?

Thanks Owen, I might even do that, since I know England from Suffolk down to Lands End prtty well from the late 60ees, but not Scotland at all.

A bridge between NI and GB? No fear, apparently the main thing keeping O from holidaying over here is the high cost of ferry travel... I note that none of these previous plans to link up to GB included the IoM or England
A bridge across the Irish Sea and four other amazing plans

Like all great men his final resting place will be in a wall.....politically it could be the wall,he envisages

I could have had a free trip to NI back in the 80s but thought ''Sod that'' so I certainly won't be paying to go there.

Owen, our families could travel together by ferry, much cheaper in one car, and surprise you know who...:-P

Geography is the problem, Diane. It would need two bridges to get from England to N Ireland; one from England to the IoM and one from the IoM to N Ireland. But a bridge from Galloway to N Ireland looks a far easier (and less costly option).

    Politics will stop it happening...

Bridging the gap from NI to Scotland

Building a bridge would require intensive consultation with local communities on both sides of the North Channel and would raise fundamental questions around where and how it could be constructed.

There are also major concerns about the area known as Beaufort's Dyke, a deep submarine trench in the Irish Sea between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It was used as a munitions dump since early in the last century and the Ministry of Defence says more than one million tonnes of weapons were jettisoned there.

It looks like ideas for a Channel tunnel go back at least as far as 1802. It was seriously considered (The Channel Tunnel Company) in the early 1900. Attached is from The Times May 12 1904.

As students we went to a visit to the JCB factory. Joe Bamford was alive then, but we never saw him. It was before the days of video so we must have been shown a film of JCB's doing a dance and Joe saying the idea of a tunnel was wrong, people would like to have a bridge they could see.

Pity Boris' mad idea never happened (I hope all of them never do), it would be great to see the garden on his bridge.

He's at it again. Boris is proposing a bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland. Isn't there a load of dumped ordnance in the sea there?

The first proposal for a Channel bridge was made by the Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus AKA Caligula who wanted a vast pontoon bridge. He is generally regarded as having been insane. Boris has been recently comparing himself with Octavius AKA Emperor Augustus, One might draw certain conclusions
