    Ok, from what I've gathered, initially British infantry brigades had an anti-tank company, but this was abandoned, and each infantry battalion instead had an anti-tank platoon.

    Were these platoons part of the Royal Artillery or the infantry? (And the earlier companies?) I gather from the name platoon, and an earlier post on the forum, that this was an infantry platoon.

    The men of the Infantry anti-tank Platoons were infantrymen, as opposed to RA gunners. Outline progression of organic inf atk capabilities as best as I've been able to define it;

    The pre-war Division included three MG Bns each fielding three MG Coys and one Atk Coy (16x 2-pr guns), with one MG Bn per Inf Bde. By 1939 though the MG Bns were all MGs (and no longer one per Bde) and Atk Regts RA took on the atk defence for the Div. Seeing the need to increase atk defence post Poland Inf Bdes formed their own Bde Atk Coys; these were manned by infantrymen and equipped with French 25-mm guns in the BEF.

    Bde Atk Coys largely disbanded by end of 1941. In 1942 Inf Bns in the Middle East formed integral Atk Pls (damn big, closer to Coy strength) with eight 2-pr guns. By 1943 there could be four 2-pr and four 6-pr guns. Inf Bns coming from Home Forces via Torch 'look' to have been issued with six 2-pr guns, but not a full personnel allocation. If so they'd have to provide the gun crews from their existing strength. From 1943 onwards the Atk Pl was established as six 6-pr guns, crewed by infantrymen of the Bn.

    Thanks, Idler! Fundamentally I wanted to clarify for myself which units were part of the RA and which were not.

    But that thread was well worth reading :)
