    Hi all,

I was just wondering about how long standard british infantry training lasted during the early stages of ww2. For example if a person Enlisted in a standard infantry reg in early September 1939 when would he be ready for deployment to a theatre of war.

    Many thanks

    Noah,

I cannot answer your question, caveat aside onwards.

This thread offers insight into one aspect of infantry training later in the war: Effects of the urban terrain on Operation Market Garden There are some clues as to the standard booklets at the end.

Was there a School of Infantry in WW2? Battle Schools were a later arrival IIRC.

I used a rather general online search: "infantry training" site:ww2talk.com which id'd many threads and in the first pgs. at a glance possible "gems": See: Military Training Pamphlets/Army Training Instructions For basic training: Primary Training and there is a sub-forum Research Material. Most of the results shown refer to the Infantry Training Centre(s)

I do recall reading a RUSI library book on training in WW2, but the title etc has been lost.

From a horse's mouth: Practice makes perfect: Training, Assault Courses, Battle Schools, Exercises, etc

Basic - primary - training was basic. Everybody, including infantry, went on to do further training in their 'trade'. From memory, infantry training was 12-16 weeks, and more for specialists, e.g. mortarmen, signallers.
