All very funny if it's not happening to you, but accidents of all kinds were very common in the armed forces during the war, and since the machines were large and the men often hastily trained many accidents were fatal. Reading the 9th Australian Div war diaries I was constantly coming across references to accidents. Australians tended to drive recklessly and often paid the price. Even less excusable was horseplay with explosives and firearms ('S'all right mate, it's not loaded') which also cost limbs and lives. It's amazing that supposedly trained soldiers and supposed adults can behave so carelessly.

Reminds me of seeing frames when a pilot committed the human error of not dropping his under cart prior to landing resulting in a belly flop. His reaction on exiting the aircraft was to do a few jumps to reflect his anger. Usually the perpetrator was a pilot of a single seater fighter aircraft.

Similar anger was shown by Mendy' of Chelsea when he gave away that easy goal against Leeds on Sunday last.

#19 Not sure. That bridge woud not take a tank anyway (Class 9?), so the guy was probably trying his best.

Unless that’s a periscope, and this is an example of fiendishly clever amphibious maskirovka

Tyre blow out during landing at Tempsford - probably something stronger than 'bugger', followed by 'phew' plus:

The result of an early trial of parachuting a six pounder anti-tank gun. The wire suspension cable of the parachute system tangled around the gun trail leaving it hanging barrel down. It landed muzzle first and then fell on to its back leaving the crash pans which were designed to absorb the landing totally undamaged. Incidentally, the gun was also undamaged as the recoil system took the landing shock and after the barrel was cleared of the soil rammed up it, the gun fired with no problems AFEE Dep Note 9 Fig 1 and 2.jpg

Surely, having lost air superiority it is now being employed in an anti-aircraft role.

  16. This 'BLUEBIRD' fell into the canal on Brugstraat, Scheemda, Oldambt, The Netherlands, 1945. The crew does not look upset in the least.

It took two ARVs, each anchored to a lorry, to pull it out:

Major Shepherd MC at Anzio was called to an important meeting. Having dressed for the occasion he left in his Jeep..
Probably taken early in the landings
RHQ set up on the edge of the Bosco three quarters of a mile inland, in a cutting with small scrubby trees to give adequate cover on the north side of Anastasia Valley, where digging in was possible.

    Jeep bogged down Anzio.jpg

The Jeep the four wheel drive all-terrain vehicle, first appears in my notes on the beach during the Anzio Landings Jan 22nd 1944.
In Tunisia they were using Carriers or light trucks.
    Obviously overestimated its versatility!
