During WW2 in Burma, a little flotilla of small ships under the command of the Burma Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, gave support to land force operations on the Burma coast [in the absence of the Royal Navy which was otherwise engaged].
For example, craft manned by the Burma Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, were largely responsible for evacuating 1st Burma Brigade across the Salween River after the battle of Moulmein in early 1942.
In many stories you will have come across these vessels: HEINRICH JESSEN, CURTANA, PIRATE and SOMAGYI. In early 1942, these vessels were under the control of Commander K.S. LYLE, RN - Naval Officer in Charge, Rangoon.
This link is a booklet written about the Burma Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve by Captain Kenneth S. Lyle R.N. Burma's Navy - Book
Meanwhile, the HEINRICH JESSEN was commanded by a civilian, Captain Hansen, a Dane. Whatever became this brave individual?.
Moreover, for anyone interested in the aftermath of Captain Lyle, Lyle, see HMS Scarab in Burma
Commentary on the individuals on this will make interesting reading upload_2019-8-31_20-27-43.png
