Hello all, I am trying to find information on my grandfathers family. Can anyone help, all I have is the following? - Leading Seaman Thomas Henry Burt, service No 201592. Died falling overboard on a ship in 1923. Aged 42 years old. - Dick Burt, one of Henry's son and was 19 years old. Believed to be in the Blackwatch and was killed in France. Thats all I have and any help would be very grateful. Thanks Danny
Thanks for your quick reply but sadly not them. Richard was the son of Henry and Beatrice Burt, Plymouth. Cheers Danny
My Grandad was Alfred Burt. One of Richards brothers. That what has confused me as no mention of a 'Dick' Burt on the CWGC home site....
Dick short for Richard thats why i posted look through the CWGC website to make sure you have correct name and regiment Tracing a Soldier - The Blackwatch Im sure members with access to ancestry will be along soon
UK, British Army and Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1730-1960 results for Burt searching this database on Ancestry there is only 1 result for a Burt death in 1923 Name: Fred Harold John Burt Event: Death Death Date: 8 Mar 1923 Are you sure of your details?? As regards Dick Burt - was he killed in WW1 or WW2 - you just said France so could be either TD
Hmm - not sure how he died in 1923 when he seems to still be alive in 1939 1939 England and Wales Register Name: Thomas H Burt (Thomas Henry) Gender: Male Marital status: Married Birth Date: 10 Dec 1881 Residence Year: 1939 Address: 10 K Residence Place: Plymouth, Devon, England Occupation: Incapacitated Schedule Number: 29 Sub Schedule Number: 1 Enumeration District: WEKD Registration district: 271/2. Think you need to be precise, in your first post you mention Thomas Henry Burt and then Dick or Richard whose father was Henry - can you clarify? What are the circumstances of his death in 1923 as it was after WW1, was he merchant navy, where did it happen? There was a Thomas Henry Burt who married a Beatrice in 1904, Plymouth, but looks like he was alive in 1939. When and where was Alfred Burt born, when did he die? Can you carefully collect all the facts you have? [OK Tricky you won that time]
All, So this information came from a piece of paper that we found in the family paperwork. It is interesting as it states, Thomas.. Richard and my Grandfather Alfreds father died in 1923, having fallen overboard! The other issue which judging by the paperwork is lacking is, it states Richard 'Dick' was killed in France serving with the Blackwatch aged 19 years of age. Not sure WW1/2. Sorry if I confused anyone with my last post. Thanks Danny
Thomas Henry Burt, Leading Seaman (201592) was born 10 Dec 1851 (as transcribed) but it looks to me more like 1881. Served until he was invalided out in 1921. Name Burt, Thomas Henry Official Number: 201592 Place of Birth: Plymouth,... | The National Archives TD - this ties in with your post #7 Tim
Navy service record for Thomas Henry Burt 201592 is on ancestry. This shows his dob as 10 Dec 1881 (but writing so bad it looks like 1857), he was an errand boy when he joined the navy in 1898, first ship in 1898 was HMS Northampton (then a Boys training Ship) and finishes Nov 1921 with HMS Vivid I. It says invalided 5th Oct 192(?1) Also by his last posting is noted "cpd Tibia and Fibula ?", so possibly a compound fracture of the lower leg. Thomas Henry is on two ancestry trees, none shows a son with either Richard or Dick as a forename. One lists Thomas Henrys siblings and again no Richard or Dick. Both show he is the person on the 1939 register as above. However there seems to be a son of Thomas Henry remembered at CWGC. One tree has a Samual John Burt & a photo of him in battle dress labeled "Uncle Sam Burt killed in London" He seems to be this casualty at CWGC: Marine BURT, SAMUEL JOHN Service Number PO/X 103181 Died 03/08/1944 Aged 39 26th Bn. Royal Marines Son of Thomas and Beatrice Burt, of Plymouth; husband of Ivy Burt, of Plymouth. Buried at Plymouth (Ford Park) Cemetery Casualty REGISTERS OF REPORTS OF DEATHS: NAVAL RATINGS confirms born 15.06.1905 Plymouth, and died at Old Coulsdon, nr Croydon Surrey. Died on war service. The 1939 Register confirms he was a fitters labourer at HM Dockyard.
This would explain why a marine of 26th Bn was killed at Old Coulsdon. Memories of the widow of Royal Marine Harry Sinclair: After four wonderful weeks together Harry was posted to London. A selection of Royal Marines who had worked in the building trade in “civi sreet” was mustered and the 26th Battalion was formed. This might have appeared a “square number” who (with hindsight) were being prepared for the Normandy landings but their duties which were to render first aid to any homes or buildings that had been damaged by the V1s and V2s (*buzz bombs) was thwart with and element of danger. For instance working in one road whilst t bomb was exploding in the next. BBC - WW2 People's War - Royal Marine - Harry Sinclair from looking at bomb maps of Croydon in the past, I remember Old Coulsdon and Croydon in Surrey were in Doodlebug Alley, the route they took into London.
Still puzzled about the 1923 death as I am firmly of the opinion that Thomas Henry Burt (10.12.1881) was alive in 1939 and likely died in 1949.
I did see that and wondered if it was him or perhaps his father (born 1851) and thought best to leave for the moment as we dont seem to have many concrete facts on this thread Thomas Burt died at sea 1923 - still alive in 1939 - died on land 1949 Dick/Richard Burt died in France (could be WW1 or WW2) - might now be Samuel John died 1944, buried in Devon or could have been killed in Croydon in Doodlebug Alley I await further facts from OP TD
I agree Thomas Henry Burt (201592) is the man on the 1939 census & the injury that led to his discharge in 1921 seem serious enough to mean that he was described in the 1939 register as "incapacitated', ie in the terms of the intent of that register not fit to be called on for any war work. The death of Samuel John BURT is confirmed in GRO registers: BURT, Samuel J. aged 39 Jul-Sep 1944 Surrey Mid Eastern Registration District (Coulsdon is part of this reg dist) Old Coulsdon interests me as my grandparents are buried there. As you say lets await futher info.
