I am looking for any information on the sub-camps for this primary camp, particulary infiormation on the sub-camp at Chingford. On the website WW2 P.O.W. Camps in the UK – ww2pow.uk it recognsies 8 sub-camps, the one at Wanstead Flats has been well documented by the Leyton Historical Group in thieir pamphlet "Behind the Wire" Behind the Wire: Wanstead's forgotten home to prisoners of war but apart from this photo attached of a Chapel built in Chingford, I have not been able to find any other infromation for Chingford. === From WW2 P.O.W. Camps in the UK – ww2pow.uk "There were eight sub camps. Wanstead Flats Victoria Park – near to the camp. The article above states it was a barracks used to hold black category Nazis. Six others – possibly – Whipps Cross Road, site of Forest Gate School, Chingford, Waltham Abbey, Woodford Park, + 1? === Any info most appreciated

This extract from a letter to my Father from Gunner Brewer in reference to pre D Day camps my Father was with the Main Body of 5 RHA at Orwell Suffolk Gnr Brewer also 5 RHA in East London.. You mentioned the “Concentration camp” at Orwell Park. We were in a similar situation but first in West Ham stadium, and then on a bomb site in Canning Town because we were sailing from London Docks. At least we were able to nip under the wire when the guard was not looking and get home. Plaistow underground station was nearby. In the D Day Museum at Portsmouth they have got a display which included a letter from me to my mother having a real “tick“ about not being able to get home from the sealed camp.
General Middleton US VIII Corps let one of his officers out of purdah in June just after D Day from a Southampton staging area. The officer went to Bristol to take a message to Bradley's by now rear HQ in Bristol. He returned with a bottle of Black Label. Talk about panic buying. (Troy H Middleton biography, p180)
