  8. This is the war memorial in Cupar, Fife. It’s on the edge of the public park at the east end of the town. If you are ever in the area, perhaps driving through Cupar towards St Andrews on the A91, you will see it in front of you as you travel east on the main street. I think it’s very striking. The angel is said by some to be a representation of the Angel of Mons, a vision which allegedly appeared to many soldiers as they were being driven back by the German advance in August 1914. However it was described in a press report of the unveiling ceremony as simply a “heroic winged female figure”. The sculptor was Mr H. S. Gamley R.S.A.

The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 29th April 1922 by Field Marshal Earl Haig. Earl Haig had strong connections to Fife, his father having been the owner of the Haigs Whisky distillery at nearby Markinch. The Haig family also owned an elegant mansion house in Guardbridge and established a distillery there, later converted to a paper mill. Guardbridge is about 5 miles east of Cupar so the Field Marshal considered himself very much a local.

The WW1 names are on the four sides of the base of the statue and the WW2 ones are on the two pillars in front. I have a particular connection to this memorial as it bears the names of three blood relations killed in action, two in WW1 and one in WW2.
