PS is it possible that separate British and Canadian units entered the town on the same day? The Canadians entered Rouen only on August 30th after the Germans finished pulling out, but there had been fighting before then, for instance seizing Sotteville on 27 August, apparently. I'm just reading a bit about this in Terry Copp's Cinderella Army, but there's not enough specific detail

P.S. To discount my previous idea - I looked up the War Diary entries for the 7th Canadian Recce Regiment (which was the recce unit of 3rd Canadian Infantry Division) and found that they were operating well west of the forest on the 31st - after setting up HQ in Gouy on the 30th, they went up towards Cailly and Neufchatel (War diaries : T-12660 - HĂ©ritage)

I guess British unit war diaries aren't online?

A look at the maps in Victory Campaign by Stacey would seem to rule out a Canadian unit. Once across the Seine, they were only as far east as Poses. 4 CAD was on the Canadian right wing with an axis towards Buchy, so I would suggest only something involving their Recce Regt, the South Albertas as being worth investigating.
