    Nicola,

See the attached scans (pages 128-129) of Richard Doherty's Eighth Army in Italy 1943-1945, for details of units fighting in the area.

Hi Peter, thanks for the help, but in the attached files, they talk about Arezzo......do you have also files about Caprese Michelangelo? Because i don't know who passed in this place.....Is not mentioned anywhere. This place is north-east of Arezzo, not far of it....

    Nicola,

Those mentioned in the scans were all the Allied units fighting in the area. As the crow flies, as you know, Caprese Michelangelo is only about 20 km north-east of Arezzo. There was heavy fighting from village to village in the steep uplands north of Arezzo all the way to Florence, but for more detailed information on specific small locations you would need to consult unit diaries. I am confident other members will spring to your aid.

I have mentioned the units that were fighting in your area between 16 and 20 July 1944. There are many experts on WW2T and, if you are patient, one of them may be able to narrow it down further for you. There are hundreds of small places in the high Apennines between Arezzo and Florence, some were bitterly fought over, some were bypassed, others, La Querce is an example, the Germans simply abandoned. You could also consult Partisan records of battles fought in the area.

When I was writing my book I used Google, then I followed this up with emails and a telephone call. Worked for me.

Simply go to your local library and ask for any books written about the liberation of your town in 1944, for partisan records check with your local/regional ANPI office, they have records that you usually can access.

I wish I'd picked up this thread before.

10th Indian Division fought up the Tiber Valley and moved over the Alpe di Catenaia - not far from Caprese - into the upper reaches of the Arno. I suggest you get hold of their War Diary.

    Regards,
