87th (1st West Lancashire) Field Brigade, RA TF - nice. Better than all those duds with stuck on badges!!
That's a great bugle. Reminded me to get on the case of a chap at work. He came across one for not much coin. About £5.00 if memory serves me correct? A Battalion of one of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. The only thing is, HIS WIFE HAS PUT IT SOME-WHERE & SHE CANT remember. It may well not be has original has that. Stu.
I wonder if the 87th (1st West Lancashire) Field Brigade, RA TF was an antecedent of the 87th Field Regiment Royal Artillery (T.A.) based at Wellington Road Barracks, Wavertree, Liverpool in 1939. Liverpool Evening Express 20th April 1939
I paid £7 for it not thinking it could be a original it was just lying on the floor. I need to do more research on the maker, it would be nice to try and date it
Found this on Ancestry message board My Gt-Gt Grandfather was Roger John Ward who started the musical instrument business in Liverpool, They traded from 4, 10, 12, and 18 St Anne street. It was RJ Ward and Sons. this business was still trading in the 1930's. The eldest son Edward did also have a musical instrument business in St Ann Street so could this be the business that your relation served his apprentiship in? Edward died in April 1920.I expect that would be when that business closed. R.J. WARD & SONS VINTAGE SOLID ROSEWOOD CLARINET LIVERPOOL LATE 1800's #425 | eBay Maybe check out e-bob TD
That could be tricky. Some say yes, some say no. I would leave it for the time being. It belongs in a Museum. Let them decide if you can manage to get it to one. This information may be has much use has a bag of spanners, but there is a book out that is called 'THE ROSE & THE ARROW' 136th (1st WEST LANCASHIRE) FIELD REGIMENT, R.A. 39-35. 338 pages. No author, or who its published by. Its going for £30. Lets hope we can get it where it belongs. Regards Stu.
I would wait just now. You will need to be sure of the metal before attempting to clean, especially as there is a fair amount of verdigris present. Lovely find though.
Great find. You could try the Horniman Museum for advice on preservation/cleaning: "You can contact us by telephone - call 020 8699 1872. Horniman Museum and Gardens, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, London, SE23 3PQ There's an email address : see their website.
Nice find. I don't know much about bugles but would I be right to say the mouthpiece tube is missing? These are often fixed with a wing nut type clamp used for tuning and the mouthpiece fits in the end of the tube. Might be difficult to find a similar type/condition tube if this one is indeed missing but it could well be worth looking for one.
Vespa, not sure if that is where the mouthpiece fits or the short 'tuning' tube that the mouthpiece fits into. It looks slightly short just to put the mouthpiece into directly. That is a bit more of a problem unfortunately - any bugle mouthpiece should fit but the tuning tube might be difficult to find if it needs one. Worth asking a bugler or a music shop their opinion.
