    Hi

I am asking if anyone has any further knowledge of the Carreras Cigarette factory in Mornington Cresent, Camden Town London. After speaking to my elder brother I discovered that my mother worked there before the war (in the cigarette industry) but after a short while she found that the basement had been converted and she was employed to manufacture munitions. It was done completely covertly, with various items, including gun sights for aircraft, arming fuses for torpedoes and even bullets being shipped out in boxes marked up as 'Craven A' cigarettes. With the need to keep the Luftwaffe from paying an uninvited visit, all the girls were made to sign the Official Secrets Act. Until after the war the only person mum ever spoke to about it was my Dad. He was away from the UK for about two and a half years and obviously nothing could be said in letters...he had no idea of her new 'career' until he got home in 1942.
