A letter to L/Bdr Brunt's father about his claim for his Son's medals

A letter to his father regarding his pay - the letter also mentions the return of his Service book

edit - I've just noticed the letter about medal entitlement is actually related to his Brother who was killed in N W Europe who was with the RE and won the MM & Bar

I think thats me up to date, as before any extra information (war diary entries, grave photos, memorial photos, newspaper cuttings etc) relating to any of these servicemen would be very gratefull received - I'll have a run through them again over the weekend and see if I can add any little snippets of info.

If you have a list of units and the date of death that you can send me I will check my hard drives for any unit diaries that match.

Thanks to Mick at British War Graves BRITISH WAR GRAVES - WAR GRAVE PHOTOGRAPHS I've added photos to Hill, Brunt, Banfield, Whittingham, Quinn & Gosling.

The site is a great resource and if anyone can help them with grave photos it is worthwhile.

5776759 Jack Needler, 2nd Royal Norfolks attached to 6 Commando - a little extra info on him here Cpl. Jack Needler and CWGC page at CWGC - Casualty Details he was a Sergeant in the intelligence section of 6 Commando for D-Day and into Normandy - I'm not sure about how he died, if it was from an earlier wound - the book seems to have been issued as a temporary ID while he was being treated just before his death. Any more info would be much appreciated.

    edit

I have just received his death certificate and cause of death is "committed suicide by shooting himself while the balance of his mind was disturbed" at Barossa Barracks Aldershot

Alistair, What did the British Indian Army Pay Book look like? Do you have any examples?

    Hi,
I've never seen an example of a book issued to members of the Britisih Indian Army, I know there is an AB64(M) where I think the M is for Modified, but it looks the same as a standard book and I think is for British troops stationed there. There are also the white linen covered bookswhich seem to be Far East made, but not sure if thats for Indians or for British troops service there.

If anyone has examples of unusual books I'd be keen to see them, there are a few questions I have about what existed - as above I've never seen an Indian Army book, what about Indian Navy? is there an Australian Navy one? how about NZ Air force and Navy, what books did the various South African service have. Some countries and services just seem to have used the British examples.

    Cheers
