Last week (link here: Cenotaph War Memorial, Colombo, Sri Lanka - WW2 panels with 46 names ) I shared with you images of the 46 names of men who died in WW2 and whose names are engraved on this memorial wall. This week I am attaching images of the c450 names (engraved on 2 panels) of those men and women who died whilst serving in WW1. Both of these panels are attached to the cenotaph itself and are located some distance above ground level. Consisting of a Cenotaph (Victory Tower) engraved with WW1 names and associated Memorial Wall (located behind) with WW2 names. This memorial can be found on the western end of Viharamahadevi Park, which, in itself, is maintained by the Colombo Municiple Council. Link here via Wiki: Cenotaph War Memorial, Colombo - Wikipedia I cannot find any CWGC link (maintenance, upkeep etc) to this memorial, but the names inscribed on it are to be found in the CWGC database, which provides additional information showing location of actual graves and mention of same names on other memorials (as appropriate). This particular post is dedicated to those c450 men and women who died in WW1 and whose names appear on both panels. Particular mention of the only woman whose name appears amongst these men: Nurse Lilian MIDWOOD (V.A.D.) Drowned in loss of H.M.S. ''Osmanieh'' (mine explosion) off Alexandria 31st Dec. 1917. Age 32. Daughter of Mrs.E.G.Midwood, of London. Casualty The cenotaph panel lists her as ''Miss'' rather than ''Nurse''. LEST WE FORGET. note: as some of the names are showing signs of wear (outer names and those near stone joints) please contact me if you require close-up images of a certain name/s.
