Hi, Was wondering if anyone had any information on my great grandfather, Private Charles Frederick Myring. He was a motorcycle despatch rider in the East Surrey regiment. His army number was: 6145297 He served in North Africa, Italy and Athens. Unfortunately he never really spoke about his time in the army as he saw some very horrific things. I also know that he received 3 campaign medals. I would be very grateful if there's someone who has more information. Many thanks Bradley Walker
Bradley. 1/6 East Surreys were in North Africa, Italy and then Greece. 1/6 East Surreys were part of 10 Infantry Brigade who were themselves in 4 Infantry Division. Follow 4 Infantry Division and you will see where he went. 1/6 East Surreys had a major part in the Fourth Battle of Cassino in May 44. Regards Frank
Surrey, England, Regimental Rolls and Recruitment Registers, 1914-1947 Name: Charles Frederick Myring Event Date: 15 Jan 1940 Regiment Number: 6145297 Regiment: East Surrey Your best bet would be to apply for his service records from the MOD via these forms Request records of deceased service personnel you will additionally need a copy of his death certificate TD
Good website here: Second World War 1939-1945 (queensroyalsurreys.org.uk) Unfortunately the museum building burnt down, surviving records taken to the Surrey History Centre. Some reading here, have looked through the indexes but the name doesn't appear.
