I'm quite new to wargaming and I have played Civilisation, Age of Empires type games. But my real interest is in WW1 & 2 so is there a games or games out there that follow the same format as the above? I like a game to develope and not to be fixed in it's play. What I mean by this is that I have a free role to throw in more units as the are built but I like the tactical warfare. If you know how Age of |Empires works you will know what I mean. The old hex flat units is so out dated now. Bit I am not looking at Commando's (single squad) games. Sorry if all the avid games think I am being too picky but just fancy playing a tank based war game instead of AoE. Any help and points????? Nick
Good question. Comprehensive list here on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_video_games I haven't tried any of the current WW2 turn-based games. Long ago I used to play "Panzer General II", which was enormous fun - IIRC you made your strategy decisions and commands, then little animated panzers trundled off across the map to carry out your orders. Often, as they advanced, the "fog" would lift to reveal some unpleasant surprise from the enemy, such as an AT gun... What appealed to me about that game was that it was possible to use "mission command" principles to win some of the tasks. I see there is a "Panzer General online" (2013) listed; that sounds current and might be worth a look.
Thanks to you both. There seems plenty to go on. Thunderbox: I have downloaded a demo of Blitzkrieg 2 and I will see if that fits what I would like. hutchie : thanks for the suggestion, I will take a look at it now regards nick
One in the middle is "Warplan Orange". It is a strategic game going on in the Far East Pacific between WW1 and WW2. What I like is you got planes and carriers but not so many to just bomb your way through.
Battle Academy is a turn-based tactical game. Nice graphics, resembling a tabletop wargame in some ways. Tweakable. 1939-1945 with lots of expansion packs. Slytherine do lots of other military games as well.
It seems as though I underestimated the number of great quality games that are out there. I have downloaded a couple and will try them out. The graphics are far superior to the games of the past. Just as a side note I dug out my old Amiga 1200 today,I have plenty of strategy games but my kids just laughed at the poor graphics and slow speed.
