I am trying to ascertain the source of the photo shown below which shows Typhoon pilots of 257 (Burma) Squadron RAF c.1944. I can't seem to trace it in the IWM records; doesn't anyone know who owns it?

It is rather good, isn't it? I think it may be from one of the 'WW2 in Colour' books?

    Paul,

Sorry I cannot be of any help, but agree that the photograph is excellent.

It really shows how big the plane was and also how large the canon barrels were.

    Regards

I agree, great photo showing what a beast it was.
Unrelated but one of my favourite Tphoon photos is below. Can't remember where I found it but it appears to be a Normandy shot of rocket carrying tiffys in amazing focus.

Doesn't the picture come from a thread about foreign aircrew in the RAF on another forum? I'm guessing the book mentioned below contains the picture, which should also provide a reference to where the photo came from to get into the book....

Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Do you have the book but it doesn't list the origins of the photo??

    cheers

    Dave

Flt Lt Htin Yain Lao was a Burmese RAFVR pilot on 257 (Burma) sqn. According to Roger A Freeman's "The Royal Air Force of World War Two in Colour", he was the only Burmese airman in Europe. He was killed when his aircraft crashed in a snowstorm returning from an Op on 20 Jan '45.

Picture below shows him sitting on the wing nearest the fuselage (actually standing on the stbd mainwheel).

    Dave,
That is a great piece of information and placing the man in the photograph adds a special touch.

Thanks - I was aware that Lao was in the photo, but Peter do you have this book on the RAF in colour? If so, does it state the source for this image?

Is that photograph real? It looks photoshopped to me, and I think that's the same aircraft repeated in the background. I could be wrong, its just that the rocket hardpoints looks computer generated.

Phaethon, could well be right there. The cam looks identical on both a/c and it just looks too clear to be 'kosher'. Wish I could remember where I found it!
Still like it though even if it is a 'sexton'.

Just out of interest is the source the RAF Museum? They have a large collection of photographs by Charles E Brown who took the photo in question.

    Same photo but B&W

Nicks - thanks for that. The RAF book confirms it does indeed come from the RAF Museum.

    Thanks for that link.
