(veritas @ Nov 12 2005, 10:22 AM) [post=41489]I am trying to locate a map on the Internet showing this battle of Comacchio. Can anyone help me please? [/b] Welcome!! Can I ask why the particular interest? I have not found any on the Internet as yet. One forum member was kind enough to email some maps, I will check with him if he is happy for me to forward to you. Check out the topic on "forgotten battles Italy" you might find something there. Regards Keith
Hello Veritas, Welcome to the Foirum. For maps and details of the opening phases of the battle, in which my regiment the North Irish Horse took part, see http://www.nih.ww2site.com/nih/narrative/italy36.html Cheers, Gerry
Welcome Veritas. The "truth" is always there however it is sometimes hard to find. Good luck with your quest.
I am doing a presentation of this battle in a Leadership School in Canada. Could I possibly get a copy of those maps? Thank you.

From there you can ewither e-mail them direct or send a PM. I assume you want tactical maps of the battle rather than general maps of the area?
here is a link to a list of books which may be available in a library. http://www.perthregiment.com/Perthindex/more.html
Troy, as you're in Canada I presume you're interested in Canadian activities in this area? The battle of Comacchio (1-4 April) did not involve Canadians as such. What followed was the main Spring offensive breaching the German line across the Senio and the battles of Argenta/Argenta Gap leading to the battle for Bologna. What exactly are you covering? No.9

No.9 If we are talking about the battle of "Conventello-Comacchio" in Jan. 45'... the following Canadian regiments took part: 8th Canadian Hussars The British Columbia Dragoons The Perth Regiment The Cape Breton Highlanders The Nova Scotia Highlanders The Irish Regiment of Canada
No Erik, they are completely different battles at different times. What the Canadians call ’Conventello-Comacchio’ at the beginning of January is better referred to, for clarity, as the Battle of Conventello. I would assume the Comacchio tag was added as the object was to clear up to the south shore of the Comacchio lagoon. This became the Winter Line where strategic offensives halted for the winter, pending the Spring offensive initiated on 1st April by 2 Commando Brigade plus excellent supports. Their task was attack and secure the whole of the track of land which makes up the eastern shore of the lagoon, by attacks from the south, the south east and across the lagoon from the south west. From there several islands in the lagoon were to be taken, Porto Garibaldi to the north east, and the town of Comacchio itself if circumstances warranted this. This was the Battle of Comacchio - or Valli di Comacchio - referred to in British Battle Honours, and after which No.43 Commando (RM) named a unit. As such the maps referred to in this thread are of no use to Troy – after Conventello the Canadians started to be withdrawn to western Europe. Report 143 - Candian Military pdf No.9
